Captain Sisko was supposed to be played by Al Pachino and Avery was supposed to played Jake. Sisko was supposed to smoke a cigar in his office all the time, or at least has one his mouth unlid, and cuss at the maintanence crew on the station through coms.... That's how Steven Ira Bher originally envisioned Sisko...with a lot of moxy.

The producers of DS9 originally wanted Samuel L. Jackson to play Benjamin Sisko but he refused. Then they tried Denzel Washington and he also refused. Then they tried Christopher Judge and he too refused. So, they held auditions and ended up casting Avery Brooks in the role.
The character of 7 of 9 was originally supposed to wear a thick full length tunic to cover the disfigured body left after the Doctor removes all of the Borg implants. But after turning down the role several times, Jeri Ryan finally agreed to play the part on the condition that she got to wear a silver cat suit instead.
