Luther Series 2

Fan.

Had just posted in your Original British Drama thread:

Luther back soon (beginning of June I think). Yay. When I first started watching series, thought: "wtf...this isn't gritty crime/detective drama." Then I suddenly thought of Ruth Wilson and Idris Elba's performances as Lynchian black comedy, and suddenly enjoyed a lot more...

I found the first couple of episodes hard going myself but then I really got in to it. I'm looking forward to the new ones.

I know what you mean. Though didn't find so much hard going as I just felt the series was more than what the BBC was pigeon-holeing it as. But I appreciate my interpretation may not be accepted by others. :rommie: The great saving grace for me was that, good or bad as the writing/direction was, Elba and Wilson such 'big' actors they can transcend material...

Hard going is maybe the wrong way to phrase it. It wasn't really grabbing me, but there was something there I liked, and Deckerd said it was worth it, so I continued, and ended up enjoying it.

Loved Luther; it was definitely more than just another crime drama; it was a first-rate character piece. I hope BBCA gets this one soon.

They got rid of his old CO?

That sucks. I liked her.

But otherwise--good news.

Do you mean Saskia Reeves? Ding-dong-the-witch-is-dead :) God, she was awful. Awful. Middle-class Brit actors down-classing is always painful to watch. And she sucked as Lady Jessica in Dune TV series till they replaced with Krige...

Well, the first episode of season 2 just finished. As always, I rather enjoyed it, even if it seems a bit more subdued than I remembered Luther - at least when it comes to the cinematography, I remember a lot of weird angles and stuff which I liked. Still though, It's an interesting premise with the Mr Punch killer and I look forward to the tension ratcheting up.

I loved the first season and I'm looking forward to the two new episodes, although I'm also disapponted that his old CO isn't returning.

Well I liked it, but given I hadn't seen the first series I did find a few things confusing. Who is Alice and why is he helping her escape from the secure unit when she's clearly an obsessed nutter?

It was interesting, and I've liked Elba since Ultraviolet, but hard to see what differentiates it from a.n.other crime drama...aside from the fact he seems to live in a squat or something?!

Well I thought the baddie was scary. Luther tends to just know stuff that I doubt most detectives would know but that's part of his charm. That and his inability to make a complete dog's breakfast of his life. He's got himself into another fine mess now. I'll be sorry to see Alice go but even the crazy storywriting couldn't have kept her around.

I wasn't sad to see the boss go since I didn't like her. The whole let's kill Luther at the end of the last season was so silly. They couldn't really keep her after that. Don't really care for the new boss but it's good to see him realise what she must have suffered having a loose cannon loaded with TNT working for you.

He was scary but also very pathetic, I liked how you could see him having to phyche himself up for killing the kids, even with the mask on.

so his old boss tried to kill him? He doesn't seem that much of a loose cannon (I've seen looser!)

I thought they did the whole incident room sweating and horrified at Luther's treatment of the psycho very well. You never know how it's going to go, which I like. It could have been a terrible mistake. That's what keeps me watching.

Yeah that was very good.

Can someone please clue me in on who Alice is and why he sprung her?

What's this nonsense about "2 specials" instead of a proper series? Several people have mentioned this, but where are they getting it from? Regardless, it's wrong, as ep 2 ended with a preview of next week's episode. Which is a relief.
