Lucasfilm announces a new direction for the Star Wars EU

^ That's from BioWare's The Old Republic MMORPG.

Specifically, it's from the pre-release cinematic trailer "Return," which depicted the first re-appearance of the Sith Empire since the Great Hyperspace War.

WOW - I must admit, I don't play games but if that game is as good as THAT, I might consider it!

If this is how you feel you need to check out Alias.

Have you thought about just moving on and finding a new interest outside of Sci-Fi movies and TV? It seems to me that nothing that happens in the genre is ever going to make you happy, so maybe you should find something else to invest your time in that you actually enjoy.

That's just stupid. I love the genre. Just because two great franchises are now being made for everyone but ST/SW fans doesn't mean I leave genres I like (if you count superhero as part of Sci Fi/Fantasy, then its really the only genres of books/tv/movies I like). A hack director and an evil corporation are not factors in my enjoyment of entire genres.

As for "Alias", the only Alias I care about is a Marvel comic starring Jessica Jones and written by Brian Michael Bendis. Abrams pile of s$%t TV show doesn't even deserve the space in my brain that is used to know that it exists. I've never seen it, and there isn't enough money in the world to make me. Its painful enough having to sit through a few hours of his crap every few years out of morbid curiosity, I wouldn't want to see what he attempts to do in an ongoing TV show.

Holding J.J. Abrams responsible and making him the target of scorn because an entertainment corporation he's not even a member of decided to decanonize books and graphic novels most of the public and even a whole lot of Star Wars fans have never read (nor ever will read) is....kinda flimsy and weak to say the least.

For a series of films you're absolutely convinced are going to suck harder than the vacuum of deepest intergalactic space you've devoted an awful lot of energy and hatred to things you claim you can't stand (yet haven't even been made yet so - how can you even remotely know?), yet will still go see because you're just too big a fan to resist.

You're making assumptions. I will not be paying money to see any JJ Abrams film, regardless of franchise. JJ Trek 09 was it, and while I wasn't the one paying for it (it was a family thing), I still regret that anyone paid for me to see it. I will see just how badly JJ Wars destroys the franchise when it comes to DVD and the public library gets a copy, I won't spend one cent on it.

Also, who just stops paying attention to a franchise they enjoy just because of corporate idiots ruining them? I still enjoy the good stuff that came before, and JJ/Disney can't ruin that. The problem is that nothing good will ever be made from the SW franchise again, movies or books. But I still like what the franchise was, even if that is now dead and gone and nothing even 1/1000th as good as the worst of the EU or movies will ever be made.

You're making assumptions.

Which is precisely what you're doing because Disney now owns the show and a director you can't stand was picked to run one chapter of it. You've been doing it all along based on a handful of other movies you didn't like. That's your prerogative, of course, but it's still a list of assumptions.

The problem is that nothing good will ever be made from the SW franchise again, movies or books.

Wrong.

You don't know that, not even remotely. You've thrown the baby out with the (allegedly filthy) bath water before you even took a close look. If it sucks and is a major disappointment for the fanbase, isn't it wiser to wait until the movie is, you know, released so you can watch it and know for sure?

"Who stops paying attention to a franchise because corporate idiots now run it?" Who judges a film and the entire future of a franchise almost two whole years before that film even premieres and before the new chapter of the franchise can even get off the ground? We're just on Chapter 1 of the new story and you already know how the huge, multi-volume narrative ends because you don't like the author and are skeptical of the publishing company.

The game is fun, but that was one of the cinematic trailers - i.e., not representative of actual gameplay.

See this developer walkthrough from 2011 for a look at some gameplay.

And if you do decide to give the game a chance, which is on the free-to-play model now, I'd suggest starting with an Imperial Agent. The IA is often considered to have the best class story.

then its really the only genres of books/tv/movies I like

Books, tv and movies aren't genres.

I think you mean media.

Abrams pile of s$%t TV show doesn't even deserve the space in my brain that is used to know that it exists. I've never seen it

Really?

Seriously, is it JUST me that finds that statement confusing?

Why would he?

He's like the Grand Poobah of all things pop culture.

He just ......... knows.

Somebody should tell Kathleen Kennedy, Robert Iger and JJ to just pack up their tents in Morocco or Tunisia or wherever they currently are. Kirk55555555555555555 has just INSTANTLY divined all the future SW films, no.....ALL future SW PRODUCT is just bad and it will all fail.

Somebody contact George and see if he's up for a "take back"!

J.J. Abrams grew up with Star Wars. He's a huge, lifetime fan of the franchise and with his decades-long nerd devotion to things from the pen and typewriter of George Lucas I can't imagine him deliberately torpedoing the Saga and/or not caring how the story's executed. There's a true, born-and-bred fan of the Lucas universe in charge of one of the films, and while not everything Abrams has helmed has been great he's made enough good product that I have faith he'll direct a good film.

Will it be on par with Hope or Empire? Likely not, but then again it could be one of the best films in the entire franchise and surprise everyone with just how good it is without the aging, rusty George in the director's chair.

All I know for sure is: we know nothing for sure. Claiming that all films, TV projects and novels from this point forward are going to be stinkbombs because of the Disney corporate logo is presumptive and downright illogical.

Interesting quote from that link:

<<Q: the thing w/ the @SWTOR sector of SW Canon is that it is SO FAR in the past and doesn't even connect to the films. Why erase it?
JH: We don't consider it "erased" it's still there. As long as nothing new directly contradicts it, it's there to be used. >>

Isn't that basically the way it always worked? It's canon until something comes along ot contradict it? lol
:vulcan:

Meet the new boss... same as the old boss!

Really?

Never seeing something yet somehow knowing it's all just a complete pile of freshly-excreted bovine fertilizer is the new "thing," apparently. It's the "in," hip way of approaching pop culture.

Come on, guys, hop on the bandwagon before it's not cool!

At the very least, Kathleen Kennedy has put together an interesting team to tackle this first Disney-era film that warrants some consideration and benefit of the doubt. Perhaps not a lot of benefit, depending upon one's past experiences with the works of respective team members, but at least some.

Hell, I'm mixed on Abrams but still intensely curious to see what comes.

I think the main reason the announcement doesn't bother me is that I come at the EU material from the perspective of a long-time Star Wars RPGer - all of what has come before in the EU can be utilized as fluff (backstory material) for the new Gamemaster who is now coming in to run a new game for us, set after ROTJ. Maybe he'll use this element, maybe he'll leave that one out, and most excitingly, he'll build NEW fluff for us to use in our own games.

I'd like to see Mara Jade, and we may if she IS in fact canon*, and Admiral Thrawn and Captain Pellaeon (don't have to do the same things, as long as they are essentially the same characters), and I'd love to see Wedge's Rogue Squadron in play - but I'll be just as happy if the new Gamemaster decides not to drop a moon on Chewie. And if he decides not to use the (to me) dreadfully BORING Yuuzhan Vong at all. Or even if he does, but manages to make make them interesting!

I'd love to see some of the best and most interesting elements of the post-ROTJ Expanded Universe tweaked and used in the Sequel Trilogy, but if we never again see nor hear anything out of a lot of it I really won't care. The post-Jedi EU got progressively goofier and dumber as time passed, anyways.

<snip>... and nothing even 1/1000th as good as the worst of the EU or movies will ever be made.
See, you totally lose me here. They are apparently using the same EU writers going forward. Why do you believe that suddenly their writing is going to go to crap, and they will all of a sudden no longer be able to create new characters that you'll love?

Yes, I understand you hate Abrams with a passion, and that you are angry that the old EU is being discontinued, but, if the same writers will be writing why can't they create new characters that you'll love?

My opinion of the EU has always been that the further away the stories get from the timeline of the films, the worse they got. All of the EU stuff that I've really enjoyed tends to be set shortly before the movies, shortly after the movies and in the gaps between movies.

Truce at Bakura: yes.

Giant moons crushing and killing Chewbacca: no.

Events set a century after that: :ack:

Surely you're joking about Chewie being killed like that.

That MUST be a joke.....right?!?!

No, wait - surely you're joking that Chewie died in the EU AT AL?!?!?!

Goes off to google.....
