Lt.Kyle

I'm Asian and I'm going to say it. If we accept SNW Kyle is indeed TOS Kyle, then we have to assume that at some point Kyle dyed his hair blonde and got cosmetic surgery to look more western. This already happens today (rumor is Jackie Chan for example got such surgery although it's never been confirmed, and other Asian celebrities)

This has extremely unfortunate implications, albeit unintended most likely on the part of the showrunners. Rather than SNW Kyle empowering Asian men, he's basically a token character stuck in the transporter room that even webcomic "O'Brien at work" would shudder at, who with visual evidence from TOS and Wrath of Khan seemingly got cosmetic surgery to become more western.

Or, and this is a crazy idea, I know, we just accept that they recast this minor character as an Asian guy and don't worry about it, because it's not an issue.

EDIT: I had a comment on the optics of the Asian poster getting a mocking facepalm but never mind, I've had my say. I don't want trouble. I think I'll take my ideas on Asian diversity, as an Asian man, somewhere else.

Wellll… we saw Kyle several times more than we saw (say) Robert April, so it kind of is. It makes a lot more sense to me to just make them two different guys with the surname Kyle with skill sets that include transporter operation. Heck, maybe TOS Kyle is SNW Kyle’s cousin-by-marriage or something, and a few years down the road SNW Kyle recommended TOS Kyle for the job.

The facepalms are in regards to your needlessly convoluted and frankly downright bizarre need to "explain" why TOS Kyle looks different from SNW Kyle when all that is required is to accept that the character was recast and was always meant to look that way in-universe.

And he may get recast again someday on a future show or movie. Does that means he underwent more cosmetic surgeries, dye jobs, and vocal retraining, or is it just a different actor and we should relax a bit and enjoy the show without sweating the small stuff?

But if you want to make it into something about you being Asian, you do you. That's complete nonsense, but whatever.

I see SNW as a reboot, thus have zero issues with characters being recast with different ethnicities

I see it as part of the prime timeline, which is why Kyle and April do bug me a little. Not much, but a bit. I just keep telling myself that April and Kyle are common names.

Kyle is more of a Chief O'Brien right now, except he shows up much more often and if they keep coming back to him like this I'm going to end up wanting him to be a main character on a Star Trek: Deep Space K-7 spin-off.

Will he have a wife and daughter who don't really want to be there? Will he get tortured in some way once or twice a season? Will he become best friends with the CMO?

I find that annoying. That's how we got terrible spin offs about Mandalorians because Fett "looked cool." SMH:weep::sigh:

Opposing view: it gave us one excellent and one good show about Mandalorians.

Which is what they are. Bridge crew does not equal main cast.

Blame every other Star Trek show for conditioning us that way, I guess...

Plus I hear that he's really mean.

I see it as a continuation of the Star Trek stories that have been ongoing since I was a kid, and have no problem with recasting of any kind or visual redesign.

No. It really isn't.

To each their own. I honestly find it more interesting if there were two separate transporter operators named Kyle (presumably with different first names), in much the same way I think it’s more interesting if there were two Valtane brothers (twins) on the Excelsior (one of whom died). But I have no objection to the recast per se, if it is one.

I don't think it's that, or at least not just that. I mean it would've felt just as weird if Nog didn't get more to do on DS9 and previous Trek series didn't really condition us to expect illiterate Ferengi teenagers to become important characters.
