Or, and this is a crazy idea, I know, we just accept that they recast this minor character as an Asian guy and don't worry about it, because it's not an issue.
EDIT: I had a comment on the optics of the Asian poster getting a mocking facepalm but never mind, I've had my say. I don't want trouble. I think I'll take my ideas on Asian diversity, as an Asian man, somewhere else.
Wellll… we saw Kyle several times more than we saw (say) Robert April, so it kind of is. It makes a lot more sense to me to just make them two different guys with the surname Kyle with skill sets that include transporter operation. Heck, maybe TOS Kyle is SNW Kyle’s cousin-by-marriage or something, and a few years down the road SNW Kyle recommended TOS Kyle for the job.
The facepalms are in regards to your needlessly convoluted and frankly downright bizarre need to "explain" why TOS Kyle looks different from SNW Kyle when all that is required is to accept that the character was recast and was always meant to look that way in-universe. And he may get recast again someday on a future show or movie. Does that means he underwent more cosmetic surgeries, dye jobs, and vocal retraining, or is it just a different actor and we should relax a bit and enjoy the show without sweating the small stuff? But if you want to make it into something about you being Asian, you do you. That's complete nonsense, but whatever.
I see it as part of the prime timeline, which is why Kyle and April do bug me a little. Not much, but a bit. I just keep telling myself that April and Kyle are common names. Will he have a wife and daughter who don't really want to be there? Will he get tortured in some way once or twice a season? Will he become best friends with the CMO? Opposing view: it gave us one excellent and one good show about Mandalorians. Blame every other Star Trek show for conditioning us that way, I guess... Plus I hear that he's really mean.
I see it as a continuation of the Star Trek stories that have been ongoing since I was a kid, and have no problem with recasting of any kind or visual redesign.
To each their own. I honestly find it more interesting if there were two separate transporter operators named Kyle (presumably with different first names), in much the same way I think it’s more interesting if there were two Valtane brothers (twins) on the Excelsior (one of whom died). But I have no objection to the recast per se, if it is one.
I don't think it's that, or at least not just that. I mean it would've felt just as weird if Nog didn't get more to do on DS9 and previous Trek series didn't really condition us to expect illiterate Ferengi teenagers to become important characters.
