Lower decks season 5 pg 18 rating

Hello all,

why so many episodes are rated 18 (at least at the german amazon)? I started watching lower decks with my daughter (13). Other seasons where rated 12 or 16. In my opinion, it was okay for my daughter and she loved watching lower decks with me.
So, do you recommend not watching lower decks season 5 for 13 (soon 14) year old?

Kind regards.

I don't know why season 5 would have a higher rating, it's basically the same kind of content as the first four. If your 13/14 year old has already watched the first four, the fifth season should be fine for them.

I'll be honest, I do not pay attention to ratings when I watch film and TV. In a parenting context, if she's seen S1-4, I can't imagine S5 being problematic. Should that happen, it's just a parent-daughter teaching moment. Sometimes kids see stuff on TV that's above their age, and it's just a parental oops & teaching moment, not a world ending event.

I looked into it and you are correct, for whatever reason all episodes but one from season five are rated 18 (which is the highest rating for German media) when the vast majority of episodes in the preceeding four seasons where rated 12 (with the odd episode rated 16 in each season). I wonder why that is, because there’s nothing whatsoever different about the show. If anything I would argue this season has actually been tamer than previous ones. I guess it must be a different person or group who did the rating for this season with a different set of standards; I don’t know what other explanation makes sense.

So yeah, I think you and your daughter are safe to continue watching the show into its fifth season if seasons one to four were alright for you. :)

Additionally, there's only going to be 10 half-hour episodes. You can always preview them, then watch again with the kids.
That would be - of course - my last way out. But, my i'd like to watch it with her for the first time, if und have the feeling, thats okay.
After all your answers - thank you so much :-) - i will watch s5 with her together.

Great community. Thank you!

Boy, i am so sorry. I cannot edit my post.

I remember Germans being surprised when they were prompted to enter a PIN to watch "Stardust City Rag" (the eyeball gouging episode from PICARD S1), as that episode was rated 18. Yet when the Blu-rays were released in Germany, the season was rated 16, going off the cover posted in the Blu-ray Forum database at least. Perhaps the streamers are self rating the episodes for streaming, but then the official government media regulator needs to rate for physical releases? Might be a topic worth looking into further on German language Reddit -- I know the UK and Australian equivalents prompt a lot of chatter in the film enthusiast and physical media collector communities.

UK wise, STLD has in fact gotten "tamer". Season 1 has three "15" rated episodes, while seasons 2 and 3 had one each and season 4 none.

Was the eyeball thing really that big of a deal? How was that any worse than the Borg Quene's upper body and wiggling spine lowering into her body in First Contact, severed Borg heads in "Unimatrix Zero," the death of Remmick (I think that's his name) in "Conspiracy," the very violent death of Tasha Yar in "Skin of Evil," numerous violent scenes in DS9, and the list goes on.

I'd argue that by and large Star Trek should be a PG-13 franchise.

The Ceti eels and the eyeball thing went "too far", while the others you mention were more or less fine.

Remmick was over the top fantasy violence, but fine for airing on US broadcast TV at 6pm. It's pushing PG-13, but nothing too realistic. I know at least one DS9 episode (I think "To the Death", but I'm not going to spend five minutes researching it for the citation needed crowd) was edited in the UK, but everything else you're mentioning aired on US TV in a much more conservative time.

The Ceti eels were cut down for broadcast, but even watching TWOK for the first time when I had to have been in 2nd or 3rd grade in this edited form was "too much". Ick. Still have a something in my ear phobia.

And the eyeball scene was much more visceral. Lots of blood, the audio. That's a case more of presentation than a summary of what happens. And I fast forwarded through the scene when watching the episode... I've only seen parts of the eyeball scene from the Red Letter Media videos, where they ran it into the ground as a point of criticism.

I'm on board with this.

I first saw TWOK as a kid, and the Ceti eels never bothered me. What was so shocking about the eyeball scene?

Why does UK TV edit stuff? What do you mean a much more conservative time, do you mean the 80's/90's or the timeslot?

I just remember being worried for about Chekov and his Captain. I never found it shocking as I'd already seen far worse on local TV.

The eyeball scene is tame compared to what I've seen in other shows.

This is probably better discussed in a place like the Blu-ray Forum, where they have a specific thread about the BBFC and film censorship.

The BBFC does have a brief case study about how they handled TWOK if you want to check it out.

Probably better discussed over on the PICARD subforum. This topic generated a ton of controversy when the episode first aired.

I read, but I just don't understand by the "BBFC" is so sensitive. The scene wasn't disturbing at all. I find a hair on the tongue to be more disturbing.

Really? :cardie:

The people that decide if a STLD Blu-ray can be purchased by a 14 year old or not in the UK.

The random things you learn being up for a UK telecom consulting gig and collecting Region B Blu-rays for almost 15 years...

Argh, that is so dumb! What do you think? Yay? Nay?

I'm just going from memory here, but I seem to recall there was a fairly graphic stabbing scene in episode 4? At that age, your child may be fine with it, but just a heads-up.

You realize, of course, that different people can be disturbed by different things?
