Spoilers Lower Decks General Discussion Thread

It´s not a problem to me, but I guess a lot of people might be disappointed that this won´t be another serious animated show, like there was proposed in the past.

While I´m curious, I am also kinda perplexed. The only thing this kind of spin-off loosely reminds me of, is that Star Wars Detours thing that never get made.

LucasFilm filed 5 new trademarks for Detours in June, and the original trademarks were abandoned in September.

The new trademarks cover a digital show, along with toys, books and other merchandise.

Well... I´m kinda glad.

So as I said, this might be it´s Star Trek sort-of counterpart.

I'm curious to see how this plays out. When there was rumors of an animated series, I was hoping for something less comedy oriented but doing things more in line with the original animated series (just less corny and cheap). But I do enjoy Rick & Morty. The Mudd episode of Short Treks should hopefully give us a bit more insight into how this guy's writing style plays out in Trek.

As for the canonicity of it all, Star Wars Explained once referred to the LEGO Star Wars: Freemaker Adventures as "a version of canon events, but not necessarily canon in its exact form." I kind of wonder whether we might not get a similar approach. Maybe future Trek shows will make fun little references to the ship and/or crew of Lower Decks?

This is CBS-AA Star Trek, where they insist their reimagined show is the same universe as the classic series even though everything is completely different. They will insist it is Prime Universe, regardless of what they depict on screen.

I realize this is probably a lost cause, but do we really have to worry about whether a zany cartoon series is "canon" or "Prime" or whatever?

Maybe we just hope that it's funny and entertaining?

Personally, it's more curiosity than actual concern. I'm fine either way.

Honestly?
I would be down to open up the Trek canon definition with a new "semi-" canonicty for animated products: In which both TAS and the new animated stuff reside. Where it's definitely kinda' canon, and stuff of it can be referenced, and the characters in it definitely existed. But not every detail must be 100% in continuity with the live-action show. A show that's as canon as it's animation style depicts reality.

If "Lower Decks" is at least half-as-good as fan-made "The Redshirt Diaries," I'll watch it :hugegrin:,

The show....will follow the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least-important ships.

Is this CBS Paramount's response to "The Orville's" popularity among many Trek fans?

The pilot/description above even sounds similar to how Seth McFarlane set the latter up, on a least important exploratory ship, mixing classic Trek adventures with lots of humor.

That's basically LucasFilm's stance on the Lego Star Wars Shows IIRC.
