Spoilers Lower Decks General Discussion Thread

I'd say the same for those who're going to like and love something no matter what.

Personally I can and do spew copious amounts of vitriol towards shows I don't like, so I'm defenitely not someone who "loves something no matter what".
I just didn't find anything particularly critique-worthy in the one episode of LD that has been released so far. I liked the characters (especially Mariner) I liked the humour, I liked the art style and designs (they even managed to make the spider look cuter as soon as it was revealed that she was a harmless herbivore).

If anything I'd say the space zombie plot was a bit cliche (and I already mentioned the hallway sleeping being a bit silly) but that alone doesn't ruin the series for me and they did mix it up in a couple of ways (such as Rutherford and the Trill girl continuing their date despite everything going on)
To me, judging form this first episode, this could be the best Star Trek since DS9 ended.

I'd almost agree with that, but there's some good Voyager and even Enterprise in there. But saying this was the best Trek since the end of eve Enterprise... That's a low bar. But it's where I've set the show.

What's even odder is that Ensign Tuvok was shown on the Excelsior, a century earlier, to have better sleeping quarters than this.

EDIT: Also even Tilly had better quarters in Discovery, a century and a half before lower decks.

Oh I meant the shows a s a whole, not that ENT or VOY don't have some good episodes, but to me, in my personal opinion, DS9 is the single best Trek show of the whole franchise. So when I say that LD has the potential to be the best since that, it's quite a bit of praise, particularly since I liked Season 2 of DISC.
I'm styill wondering where SNW will fit in my ranking...

The ensigns in the TNG Episode Lower Decks were also mentioned that they had 2-person sleeping quarters (the human ensign and the Vulcan one mentioned that they were rooming together)
But with LD I do make some leeway with the depiction of the sleeping quarters, because the show is a comedy and it fits the theme of "these are the lowest of the low with the worst quarters and worst jobs"

Didn’t we see the same kind of arrangement on the Enterprise in Generations when the saucer was going down?

Same here. But, I see no reason to waste my energy on spewing hatred.

To be fair, Discovery is not really a common ship of the line.

That could still be handwaved with the Enterprise being a top of the line ship and the Cerritos a bottom tier ship. But it becomes less believable when Tilly and Tuvok, a cadet and an ensign, had better quarters a full century before (even if Discovery and Excelsior were top line ships then, they'd probably be so outdated to be at the level of Cerritos by Lower Decks).

The bunks in the hallway would make sense for me if it were for enlisted crewmen, but even ensigns would probably have separate quarters--though probably they would share them with another ensign. But Trek has always been pretty bad about handling enlisted characters, so it's not a big deal. And the Cerritos is (presumably) a smaller ship with less space to utilize.

Gotta have room for Ops.

Well .. It's a room with bunk beds.. Id rather have the side hallway with the individual pods...

But it should be 1 room with 2 people in it, roommate style, with a shared bathroom, either shared with neighbor or communal for a section.

Lt may have there own room depending on space and billet.

Imagine voyager having hallway bunks.. Eww

iirc we saw a room with bunk beds where Dr. Crusher and the medical staff moved a patient to, in order to shelter them during the collision (I assume) but we don't know what exactly hat room was used for. Though it could very well be communal quarters, you are right. Still it was a room, at least. It might even have been a sort of "safe room" or shelter for situations like that.
But as I said, I have no problems with accepting it as a part of the show's "lowest of the low" theme.
Gotta have room for Ops.

They even have a Cetacean Ops  Those dolphins need their space.

I'm gonna say if there isn't at least one episode where the dolphins in Cetacean Ops are shown and clearly stated/portrayed to have a higher status than the Lower Decks personnel, I will be a bit disappointed.

The big question is whether the universal translator will output dolphin speech into English.
