Spoilers Lower Decks General Discussion Thread

I'm loving Lower Decks more on this rewatch. It might actually pass Prodigy in terms of my favorite of the new treks, but I see Mariner so differently now in a more positive light. They've really done a great job with character development. Just started Season 3 a few nights ago and hope to finish it this week.

As for the music, I wish they would release more Lower Decks music. I think they only released Season 1 but I would love to add the rest to my Star Trek playlist library.

The LDS USS Cerritos Crew Handbook is out now - and my copy turned up today! Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!! I can't wait to start reading when I go to bed in an hour or so.

I think it's awesome - well, so far. I'm almost halfway through - up to the chapter about the bridge. There are so many little notes and almost throw-away explanations that make a few bits & pieces of LDS make more sense. Things that you may not really have thought about, but once explained had me thinking "Oh, yeah!" (like why there are holodeck biofilters instead of the holodeck turning all that "waste" matter into energy or whatnot).
It also helps that Rutherford has a super sexy expression slapped across his face in the Engineering chapter that he's featured in! :luvlove:

Didn’t find the Crew Handbook under the Christmas tree, so I ordered one myself. :) Should be here by the end of the week. From all I’ve seen it seems to be pretty well-made and gets the tone and voice of the characters right.

However, what I would like to own even more is an Eaglemoss style magazine article about the design of the Cerritos. Sadly their model didn’t include a magazine, since it apparently never got made before they went bankrupt. Would be really nice to learn something about the design process. I’ve seen some of the various concept sketches that are floating around on the internet, but never heard the designer talk about their thinking.

For european users as me.

Appears season 3 of lower decks in blu Ray go out in Germany 7 of march....

Amazon and other sites tell that he have these languajes:

Italienisch (DD 5.1 Surround), Deutsch (DD 5.1 Surround), Englisch (DD 5.1 Surround), Französisch (DD 5.1 Surround), Spanisch (DD 5.1 Surround)

At finish if this is true is a great news from europe fans, as they appear have included all main european languajes.

Come to think of it … Do we even know just who the designer of the Cerritos is? I’ve done some research, like reading up on it on MA and watching the video interviews the Trekyards guys did with Mike McMahan, but for whatever reason they never name someone as the designer for the ship. I guess this points towards it being a design that was created by committee rather than one single person, but still, you’d think they’d drop some name at some point. All a bit mysterious.

Do they list production designer or some such title in the credits? I assume they have an art department like the live action shows.

They do have that, yes. I had a look at the full list of production credits for the show on IMDB, which literally lists a hundred different people as prop designers, storyboard artists, background artists, color designer etc. Unfortunately no listing that’s really indicative of who specifically was responsible for the Cerritos. It’s weird, because usually for ships in Trek it’s known who designed it.

You could try asking Co-Executive Brad Winters (@bradinLA) on twitter, he's pretty active, or even Mike himself.

Yeah, just to be clear the Amazon listing suggests it's the same extras as the US release, only with the additional language options.

~ Sorry you didn't get the Crew Handbook under the tree - it must have fallen out of Father Christmas's sack (unless Krampus got hold of it?). So, has your ordered copy arrived, Michael? Are you even now poring through it and saying to yourself (as I did): "Just one more chapter/section...", "Just one more page....", "I'll just read this bit, then that's it for now - Ooh, a Badgey bit!" :adore:

~ Yeah, I'd love a magazine or book that covers the design process and tech.specs, too. When I first saw the Cerritos, I was a bit dismayed at how awkward and gangly it was, but it quickly grew on me, and now I love it!
If you do manage to get in contact with Mike McMahon or Brad Winters as someone suggested, I hope they respond with a little (or a lot!) of info. Fingers crossed! :bolian:

In other news: My sister's Xmas present to me finally turned up (we had to wait for it to be shipped from the US) - Season 3 of LDS on Blu-Ray! I'll be watching it shortly - as long it works on my BR player.

Edit: It works!! I've just watched "Grounded", "The Least Dangerous Game", and "Mining the Mind's Mines". Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... :adore: :guffaw:

Nah, it’s fine. I got the latest Star Trek: First Contact art book, season one of Prodigy and season two of Strange New Worlds on blu-ray instead, so I was smiling from ear to ear on Christmas evening. ;)

Yes, it arrived! And I actually just spent this morning in a comfy chair under a warm blanket reading through about half of it. :luvlove: I think it gets the tone right perfectly and I've been chuckling the whole read through. Presenting it as the in-universe crew handbook was an inspired choice and having those interjecting editorial notes by the characters is my favorite thing about this. My favorite gag so far was the very first one in the book with Captain Freeman’s note to Boimler, which I won't spoil here, but I'll admit this let me laugh out loud. And I think I can really use some of that right now.

I appreciate that author Chris Farnell was able to have this as up-to-date as possible, with our Lower Deckers having the right rank and including T’Lyn. I’m sure eventually it will feel out of date, but for right now it works perfectly, coming out of the last season.

Probably my only criticism – it’s a big one, though – would be the lack of any new art for the book. The work on the layout is flawless and the book is beautiful to read and look at, but it’s a shame that all images they used are either screenshots from the show or stuff that’s pretty obviously from the pool of promotional material. I think the only section in the book that might actually have some genuinely new art is the species drawings at the end. But otherwise I feel like I have seen everything in this book somewhere else before. It’s a perfect read, but visually it leaves much to be desired, I think. When I open the book for a section about engineering, for example, I don't just want to see a screenshot from the show or a promotional desktop wallpaper repurposed for the book, but I'd love to see actual newly created art and schematics showing these places as they would not be able to show them on the show. It's a shame, because I'm sure all sets on the show exist as virtual 3D sets, so turning these into info new graphics would definitely have been possible.

What I love, too, is that they included the MSD / Okudagram of the Cerritos as a spread. Would have been cool to have it a little larger, though, maybe even with fold out pages. But it’s nice to have that in printed form.

I'm on it and will let you know what I can find out, if anything. And yes, I remember my initial reaction upon seeing the Cerritos being similar. I quickly grew to love it, however. It’s just the perfect ship they could have designed for this type of show.

Sweet! You have some fun with that! You are not seeing those for the first time, do you?
