If you think about it Doctor Who is aimed at 8 year olds and BBC Three is aimed at 16-30 year olds, so Class is intended for an older audience than Doctor Who is.
What? No, just because someone is dressed in black, standing in shadows with a gun doesn't mean they're bad...

Just October. Isn't listed for the first week but that could change.
With the tie-in novels due to be released at the end of October, it'll obviously have to premiere some point before that.
The BBC announced that the first two episodes will go out on October 22nd.

BBC Three's stated target audience is 16-34. To compliment Cbeebies target audience of 0-6 and CBBC's target audience of 6-12.
Young Adult means you have to talk very slowly about puberty, and when a couple of starcrossed lovers thrash against each other, taking out their rigorous sexual inclinations, it's a firm handshake.

So it's Torchwood? Doctor Who already has mature themes, Clara losing Danny for example and her grief, the starship UK abusing a sentient being, the question wether to change history to save people or not comes up regularly (Fires of Pompeii and Waters of Mars). Or is it okay to kill innocent kid Davros to prevent billions of deaths or is that wrong and those are just a few recent examples.
When they say more mature I think what they mean is more sex and blood and that often ends up being juvenile.
Looking back at The Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood, the former was made for a much younger audience but ended up being the more mature show. Torchwood was like a 13 year olds idea of a mature show i.e. dumb.
In Canada, Space will be premiering Class October 22, same day as in the UK.
I do find it surprising that BBC America is waiting until 2017 to air this, what with Canada and Australia broadcasting the same week as the UK. BBC America seems to be dropping the ball, as I imagine by 2017 most Americans interested in the show will have already sought out alternate means.
Doesn't bother me, I get to watch it on Space. Still, this is an odd move to make.

If I had to guess, they had already made their scheduling plans, and they don't have the free timeslots in October/November for Class. Plus, a month's notice isn't helpful for their marketing of the series; it takes time to book space in, say, Entertainment Weekly, get signs on buses, etc.
I realize that the BBC likes to play its games with scheduling, but that's not always helpful to its commercial partners. A broadcast in 2017 isn't ideal, but it's probably the best they can make of a bad situation.
Which is a bit stupid really. BBC America is a production partner. They would have known more than Joe Public do and British broadcasters manage all that on short notice but I guess in the end it's just done differently over there.
