I didn't even think about Nero, it would be interesting to see him pop up somewhere in a pre-Hobus Prime Universe novel.

Yeah, though I'm wondering how they're going to integrate Nero into the larger proceedings, since he was supposedly just a "simple miner" prior to Hobus, and the movie-version of events seems to imply that Spock Prime and Nero only meet for the first time right as Spock prepares to deploy the red matter (unlike Countdown). I definitely do want to see Nero developed more in prose in some capacity by this particular stable of writers, though.

They've got an amazing opportunity here.

I assume there are many characters, other than Spock, who could run across Nero.

I'm pretty sure Nero has met Vaughn at least twice.

If we go through his whole backstory, he could meet Vaughn, Nan Bacco, and Ambassador Garak all on the same night!

Aw, I just realized, this news reduces the likelihood of doubling back and doing some "Lost Years" books set pre-2385, with more Bacco (or pre-2381, in Vaughn's case). Oh, well, one of the upcoming Voyager novels has "Earth" in the title so, you know, fingers crossed.

Can't wait for the one inevitable Badass Captain Robau novel series.

A real badass would've taken that spear and given Nero an enema with it.

    Just sayin'.

That's what the movie couldn't show...Nero spend some of the years waiting for Spock-prime, in recovery from what Robau did.

I wouldn't mind seeing one or more novels about Nero, but I'd like to see something more creative than Nero was stuck in Klingon prison for years. It would be fun to have a novel or two about Captain Robau and the Kelvin.

OK, I'm confused here. Are the novels actually finally allowed to reference the destruction of Hobus and Romulus? What happened?

Reportedly, the new license that Pocket and CBS have been negotiating will allow them to use Kelvin Timeline content at last.

Does this mean the novelverse timeline can advance again? Are there any plans?

Yes and most likely but we don't know of them yet.

Yeah, the contract sounds like it's yet to/only just coming in to play, which means that any discussion of what's to come and how to handle it have barely - if at all - advanced beyond 'so that's a thing we can do now.'

Personally, I'm still hoping they take their time on the destruction of Romulus. The breakneck speed of 24th century books proceeding almost in real time was not something I enjoyed, though the stories were good. That speed lost sight of characterization, IMO. Barreling forward just because they can would do the same thing, I fear.

Yeah, something that is as big of a galaxy changing event as the destruction of Romulus really should not be rushed.

Maybe a multi-novel series like Destiny?

Honestly, if they want to spend at least a year or two of real-world time building up to that event in a meaningful way (and also maybe substantively setting up the character of Nero, and why he got involved in Spock Prime's mission), I totally wouldn't complain, and then they could finally depict the Hobus supernova itself (and its political aftermath) in a culminating, Destiny-style event epic, one that is going to be informed by the rich, deep storytelling-lore established in the Litverse.

That scenario really sounds like the best option to me.

I'm not sure that's necessary. Countdown established him as someone who befriended Spock beforehand, but that doesn't fit with the actual film, which strongly implied that he was a stranger to Spock before they met at the supernova. And his motivation was made quite clear in the film -- he wanted revenge for the death of his wife and his planet.
