TNG - “Redemption (part 1)”
Always found this one a bit dull as season finales go, especially coming a year after the Earth-shattering “Best of Both Worlds”. I certainly appreciate what is essentially Trek’s first foray into ongoing story arcs, although I wish it had been something a bit more exciting than Worf’s reputation. The Duras Sisters add a little spice, but this one somehow lacks the needed sense of drama and urgency. And after all this time I still don’t know what to make of the whole Sela thing. If nothing else, the closing reveal is certainly one of the show’s biggest WTF moments...

I actually found it more enjoyable than Part I, which was rather a dull talkathon for me. The overall plot isn’t that strong, but it’s an entertaining enough start to the season. I’m still not sure what to think of Sela. Was it a bit of a shark jump moment? Is that maybe why, after her next appearance, the writers promptly forgot her? Always good to see Gowron and those scarily bulging eyes. The Starfleet commander Data is paired with flies in the face of the notion that Starfleet officers are all sweetness and light.

TNG “Ensign Ro” - I forgot what a great little episode this is. In some ways it’s like a pre-pilot for DS9, setting up the Bajoran/Cardassian situation and making Trek politics significantly more gray. Michelle Forbes is great at bringing an edgier character to the cast, although it’s kinda sad they didn’t really DO anything with the character until her final appearance in s7. In a way that feels like wasted potential. Loved how well Guinan was used in this ep.
