Lindelof talks title, and time gap

Flying Spaghetti Monster

Vice Admiral
Admiral
here

you think that the title possibilities would have been figured out when the franchise started.
I'm glad there;s no eight year gap (hint: TDKR) from the previous film and the new film.

There’s no word that comes after the colon after ‘Star Trek’ that’s cool. Not that ‘Star Trek: Insurrection’ or ‘First Contact’ aren’t good titles, it’s just that everything that people are turned off about when it comes to ‘Trek’ is represented by the colon.
Yeah, that's right, people are repelled in droves by the sight of a colon. What a twit.

Of course, that's not what he said.

Well, if anything from Lindelof's interview, we know for certain that "Star Trek II" (or "Star Trek XII") won't be in the title.

Personally, I think they already have decided on a title and are still keeping it under wraps for a little bit longer...

Part of the problem with those titles was that they either kind of fit the Star Trek mold of slightly-more-niche-than-mainstream or too generic. For the former, Insurrection is an example. They wanted to use the more common and more effective Resurrection, but Alien beat them to the punch. Also, the term First Contact, I think, only became popular because of the movie, not before it. And then Nemesis is just too bland and too generic. To me, Generations is perhaps the best fit, and only then because it was a play off of the title of a popular TV show.

With that said, the words "Star Trek" better be in it. Leaving it out didn't quite work for Enterprise 10 years ago.

We should probably lend Lindelof a hand and come up with some snappy titles. Star Trek Two-Elve!

On a side note, my pet peeve with movies in general, and not Trek-specific, is when an original movie comes out with a colon, like Wolverine, Prince of Persia, Taladega Nights or the first Pirates of the Caribbean (and I can't be bothered to type out the full titles for each of those movies), simply because it presumes that the original will be so popular that a sequel will be made. A colon provides an easy first half of your sequel title, after all.

I don't see anything in the linked article about a time gap.

I'm sure they considered plenty of possibilities. But take it from a writer -- it's not always easy to choose the best title. On some projects, I come up with the ideal title within hours of having the idea, but sometimes it's much more of a struggle to find something that really works for the story and sounds good, or to pick between multiple less-than-ideal possibilities. There's a spec novel I've been working on intermittently for four years and contemplating for even longer, but it was only late last year that I finally hit upon the right title for it.

And that's when it's mostly just me coming up with title suggestions. I'm sure with all the different people involved in the movie staff, and all the different people they have to satisfy, the process becomes a lot more complicated, with a lot more suggestions being mooted and a much harder time getting everyone to agree on/settle for just one.

I really do like the ongoing idea of the first sequel being subtitled, "To Boldly Go", followed by either WNMHGB or WNOHGB. I think it rocks. But I would imagine the idea has been spun around countless times, and if they truly have yet to arrive at anything definitive, they've determined there is an issue with this concept.

I think they're going to borrow a page from the Nolanverse Batman movies and just call it "Starship Enterprise."

My votes:
Star Trek for Stupid People Who Want It to be a Comic Book Movie

or

Star Trek There is a Villain in the Film But it Doesn't Matter Who It Is As Long As Kirk Has Someone To Fight For Two Hours

in all seriousness just call it

The Ongoing Mission.

I don't think there's a chance in hell they'd want anyone to mistake it for the cancelled Star Trek: Enterprise or think it's connected with it in any way.

That's crossing a line. It's one thing to express the opinion that a movie is stupid, but you have no right to call its fans stupid. That's just petty personal attack and there's no excuse for it. People don't deserve to be insulted just because they liked a movie you didn't.

I wasn't crossing the line. Not the way you think I was. So take a chill pill. I was making fun of how the people making the movies seem to think they have to follow in the mold of the current fad of comic book films in both plot and marketing. Even though I was calling fans stupid in my fake title, I wasn't actually calling them stupid, I was referring to the lack of originally (or even classic Trek tropes) in the mindset of the thing production-wise. Relax, bub.

Outside of Trekkies, everyone else at this point only really remembers TOS and TNG--although some may still vaguely remember VOY (mainly as the show with the stacked blonde in it).

Last I checked, NCC-1701 was still called "the Starship Enterprise" in Star Trek XI.
