The thing about the Ferengi rules of acquisition is that most of them aren't even good business ideas. The first rule, "Once you have your money, never give it back to them." Sure, your loyal regular is dissatisfied with his drink and wants his money back. You give it, he comes back tomorrow, you don't, he never comes back again. Short term greed for greed's sake as a profitable business directive is asinine.

A Ferengi would be smarter: the customer gets compensated with a non-exchangeable coupon that provides him with another drink (of lesser value), plus an extra drink only available from this establishment the next day.

Really, actually giving money back basically never works ITRW.

Hated the Ferengi on TNG and dreaded when an episode would feature them. DS9 changed my opinion. Quark and Rom are absolutely brilliant!!! The Negus, Ishka and Brunt are annoying but I still like their characters.

Ps I still can't believe Brunt, Weyoun, Tiron, Penk and Commander Shran are all portrayed by Jeffery Combs... what a bloody talent!

Profit and Lace is the only Ferengi centric episode I can't sit through, but even that one I liked enough the first time to sit through it a second time.

But most of the other ones :techman: Gene must've been high on some good chronic if he thought they'd ever be a serious menace to TNG, but as comic relief and social commentary from an outsider's perspective for Quark, they work a lot better.

I believe Quark even was prominent in a few episodes that were more poignant than funny.
