lets talk ferengi...

A Ferengi would be smarter: the customer gets compensated with a non-exchangeable coupon that provides him with another drink (of lesser value), plus an extra drink only available from this establishment the next day.

Really, actually giving money back basically never works ITRW.

Timo Saloniemi

In the case of a drink at a bar or some retail item, yes, but in the case of a business agreement where he did not deliver on contract, attempting to give some kind of credit could be construed as insulting. Better to maintain a good business connection.

The Rules of Acquisition are just greedy aphorisms. Peace is good for business, war is good for business! Never sleep with the boss's wife, always sleep with the boss! 20 variations of 'Women suck'. Short pithy sayings that validate the Ferengi impulse to patriarchal, deceptive, short term high risk ventues. In the show, Quark's biggest successful profits that we see came as a result of fostering loyalty (Who Mourns for Morn). Sure, his biggest losses of profit have been sentimental and moral in nature (Rules of Acquisition, Business As Usual). But Quark holds the knowledge most of the series even if he doesn't want to admit it, the Rules as he memorized them don't make you money off Ferenginar. You can't make money off Ferenginar without fostering loyalty.

IMO the Ferengi are usually best in non-Ferengi centric episodes. When Ferengi other than the regulars get involved the story tends to immediately get super-cartoony.

Quark was actually pretty cool. As a kid I was under the impression that he was supposed to be a slimy little toad, but when my wife and I rewatched it I found him to be very dashing, actually (I always liked the character, I just saw him in one light and then another). I saw him being a ladies man at any opportunity. I told my wife that Quark must be considered handsome among his people (and in other parts of the galaxy). She told me that she actually found Quark attractive (Dukat, too). It's the confidence and the smile.

my favorite of the ds9 characters, the funniest and some times the smartest of them all. its always raining on ferengenar!!

bet you've seen this but those who didn't might get a kick out of it...here's a link to the 286 ferengi rules of acquisition.

Necessary Evil was on Heroes & Icons yesterday. Excellent episode, I enjoyed it thoroughly. The flashbacks of the occupation while Odo is conducting his investigation going into how Odo, Kira and Quark met with Dukat manipulating Odo is great storytelling.

I believe Quark even was prominent in a few episodes that were more poignant than funny.
Yeah, House of Quark, though funny, wad also poignant. I wish that they'd made Grilka a semi regular as his wife, though I was glad to see her again in a subsequent episode.

But it looked serious. they really loved each other.

Quark was clearly infatuated. On Natima's part, it's not that clear whether she loved Quark or she was encouraging him to think that she did as long as he might help her escape.

It looked sincere to me. Plus she didn't try to take advantage of Quark, which is what she would have done if she was deceiving him. Plus star trek is not THAT subtle, they'll always let you know when a villain is a villain. If they don't then you can conclude that it's one of the good guys.

if no rule applies, make one up.*

*The unwritten rule.
There is noooooo....rule 6.

I wonder what Ferenginar's overall standard of living is like, what is its planetary capitalization, how much of a dispensable budget does it have, how many colony worlds, how many ships, how much foreign investment on Ferenginar and by Ferengi--some metrics of true planetary wealth we might apply. How does Ferenginar compare, say, to earth? Or Rigel IV or Vulcan or Q'onoS?

Ferenginar is now a socialist world, since Rom is the new Nagus. Or at the very least a federation like world. It was already on its way to that toward the end of DS9 even before Zek named Rom as his successor.

One thing I would have expected from Ferenginar is that it would have had a relatively thin atmosphere. After all, Ferengis had to have evolved to be a large eared species for some practical environmental reason. Large ears would assist in hearing on a planet with a thin atmosphere.

I think it's because Cave Ferengi ate insects and they needed extra sensitive hearing to hear them crawl through the constant noise made by the rain.;)

I always got a laugh out the Ferengi threatening to denounce things or throw people off the tower of commerce to the crowds below. Such drama queens

But Quark always says that the ferengi aren't as bloodthirsty as Klingons.

well not as "blood thirsty" but some times we see that latinum can cause a ferengi to kill like the episode where quark is nagus and theyre all trying to assassinate him.

Yet, note that when it's a ferengi there's always a bit of humor in it. One gets the feeling that their bark is worse than their bite.

thats what makes them such great characters, dont forget after rom tries to kill quark, quark gives him a promotion to reward his "treachery"
