"Let's Punch It"

I wasn't terribly impressed with "Punch it!". I'm an "engage" fan and not so much a "make it so", though I do a pretty bad impression of data doing an impression of Picard from Generations <flapping hand together> "Make it sooo"

Also, wasn't Kirk's tagline from TOS, "steady as she goes"? I kinda like that too.

Yeah that was one of his taglines...it's a classic.

Ugh is that what Picard said...LOL "make it so".....ok so I take back "punch it" as being incredibility lame and insert "make it so" in there...but punch it still isn't much better because it is also from the 1989 Toyota commercial with the old women ( I know I said this 3 times but I just googled it) ...it was very popular...almost as popular as where's the beef. No one else remembers this commercial except me huh...I find that very hard to believe....

I remember it. It's just that the line didn't originate with that commercial any more than it did with Star Wars.

It seems phrases and/or other terms from the 20th century are still inuse in the 23rd century.

Example, Kirk to Pike: "What the hell are you talking about man?"

Or something close to that. Hmmmm I don't mind....much.

If ever there was a line that demonstrates how important an actor is, maybe it's this one. In my opinion, Bruce Greenwood is the best thing about this movie, by a country mile. He made a terrible line not only bearable, but enjoyable. That takes skill. Mr Greenwood has it by the bucket load. See "Thirteen Days" if you haven't already. It's a shame he wasn't in a vastly superior Trek movie, but I guess you can't have everything. Them's my thoughts, anyway.

Thank you....I had to practically beat that out of you that you (or anyone) remembered.... Ok so maybe it didn't originate with that commerical... but it was popularized by it...so much so that I remember it from 20 years ago.

LoL at the TNG hate!

Though "Engage" did end up getting overused. "Make it so" was more for executing a plan of action than going to warp and in my opinion never got old.

"Punch it" was cool and matched up nicely with the new jump to warp effect, which makes it feel almost like the ship is getting "punched" to warp in an abrupt burst. Better not to over use it, however. Mostly it worked because this was the Enterprise's maiden voyage and because of the earlier scenes with young Kirk in the car and on the bike. This phrase (and the "parking brake" line) establish the connection between the new ride and the old ride that Kirk left behind him on earth.

Yes Bruce Greenwood is the definitive Pike over Jeffrey Hunter. Thank goodness that he decided to quit the roll when the second pilot was made, or Star Trek would have never been what it was. Hunter lacked any of the humor or coolness that Shatner brought to the Captains roll.

LOL.... I know it was a mistake, but the captain's roll? :-) Poor Shatner... lol..

LOL! I missed that, good catch.

As far as Engage goes, as over used as it seemed to be, I think it would have been even more noticeable if he didn't say it. Of course he could have mixed it up a little and shouted out an Activate once in a while.

As far as Punch It and the overall characterization of Pike? I was totally fine with it, and thought he was very good. However if I was the captain, I probably would have said something like, Disengage the external inertial dampener and then punch it. It wouldn't have been as amusing, but it would have gotten us to Vulcan faster; Just in time to be obliterated with the rest of the fleet. I guess that's why he's the captain.

I loved everything about nu-Capt. Pike, including "Punch It". I never saw this fabled 1989 Toyota car commercial, but I have seen Star Wars many times, and I love it when Han says it too :)

It didn't hit me at first that Sulu indeed did have the parking brake on.:)

"Russian whiz kid? What's your name, Chenkov, Chirpov?"

I thought Pike was great in the film, but I didn't like the line. Just made me think of Star Wars. I think Lando said it too in ROTJ.

I like Kurn's "execute" the best probably.

Exactly. I would think that pretty much defines what an external inertial dampener does. Maybe that was the problem, Pike enjoyed spouting twentieth century coloqualisms, and the crew only understood technobable. Good thing Spock was there to translate. Pike was lucky that when he said punch it, Sulu didn't put his fist through the console.
