"Let's Punch It"

Yes -- "Engage" was also fun and interesting the first time I heard it. After hearing "engage" many, many,...many more times, it got to the point that I would cringe when I heard it.

"Punch it" is great used once in this film. If Pike or Kirk or anyone says it again, that too would be "cringe-worthy".
would sound kinda funny :)

Yea its a Pikism, I wouldn't want nuKirk using it anymore than I would want to hear kirk say "make it so".

It would be great to hear that line in the sequel.
My sister kept saying "Digitize me." and "Go for the eyes." when Kirk was running away from those monsters on Delta Vega.

'Go for the eyes. The throat. A vulnerable spot.'
'Or you could build a weapon.'
:D

It was cool. But not nearly as cool as when Han Solo says it. But then again, Harrison Ford does everything just a little bit cooler than the rest.

Yes Bruce Greenwood is the definitive Pike over Jeffrey Hunter. Thank goodness that he decided to quit the roll when the second pilot was made, or Star Trek would have never been what it was. Hunter lacked any of the humor or coolness that Shatner brought to the Captains roll.

Greenwood on the other hand, brings all of those elements and something new. Being the mentor figure to Kirk in this film, he brings a whole new edge. I just love that line, "your father was Captain of a Starship for twelve minutes, and saved 800 lives. I dare you to do better." That line gives me chills every time I hear it.

"Punch it", is just plain cool. Sure it's from Star Wars, but who cares. "Engage" just sounds lame. Before next gen, I think Kirk always just said "Warp Factor 8, Mr. Sulu" or something like that. The most direct he got was in TWOK, "GO SULU!"

This would have been better:

Spock: It's 106 Light Years to Vulcan, we got a full warp core, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses.

Pike: HIT IT!

Well I guess they could've "spooled up the FTL", and then yelled "Jump", but then we'd have to settle with knowing that no matter what happened at the end of the film, "God did it"

Wow, "Punch it" sounds so much better in comparison!

LOL.... I know it was a mistake, but the captain's roll? :-) Poor Shatner... lol..

I think punch it sounds incredibilty lame...again I'm in the minority here. OMG it's from Star Wars...well that really makes it all the worse. As much as I like wars I don't need these references in my star trek movie...it's certainly not the other way around now is it. Speaking of the easter eggs....Abrams needs to stop including ref's of every friggin project he's ever worked on in trek. Who the hell wants/needs to see cloverfield "nods"... pretty soon he'll just have a movie filled of referneces of his last movies/series and projects....

So nobody remembers the car commercial with the old broads saying this lame ass punch it line huh?

Yeah I prefer "engage" or "warp factor whatever" because that sounds more professional.

Just because it was said in Star Wars (and I actually didn't know this beforehand) doesn't mean it's a reference back to SW.

I'm pretty sure they say "planet", "space" and "moon" in Star Wars and Star Trek. Are those moments "too 'warsie' to handle"?

Either way, it's something that both Trek and Wars characters got wrong.

On the helm, it looked more like a lever, or a throttle to me. You push that back and forward...

Feel free to punch a few buttons if you like though. Is there a big red one, marked 'Reset'?. :p

Didn't Riker at one point say "... and punch it up to warp 9"? I only recall this because a friend would repeat it as derisive remark. He didn't like STTNG; too many kidnappings...

Maybe he did his dissertation on Admiral(or fleet captain?) Pike? :techman:

I didn't remember "Punch it!" from Star Wars. Is it really that popular of a phrase connected to Star Wars the same way "Engage!" is to Star Trek?

Pike should have picked up a wireless and said "Enterprise Actual"

I think I like the whole delivery of the line. Something about it just kicks ass imho. Greenwood just has one of them epic voices.

Yeah, i agree with this, thats what i liked about the trailer too. He really sounds like a no-nonsense, lets-get-on-with-it-already, leader and definently knows where his parking brake is. How can he not say punch it at least one more time?:techman: As a mentor for Kirk, i feel safer already.

Jeffy can eat a fat :borg:.
He probably could at that... and come back for seconds. One of the finest actors of his generation. Ask your Media Studies tutor about one of the greatest American films ever made, not to mention one of Steven Spielberg's favourites - The Searchers.

I'm sorry that saving Earth from destruction isn't proof of his ability to captain the enterprise..... Instant commissions have happened in reality and will happen again in crisis.
Care to name any from recent history? You see to me, a Captain of the Enterprise incapable of saving Vulcan from Star Trek's equivilent of oil rig workers, really can't be all that... We're talking about Commanding Officers capable of facing down insurmountable odds and overpowering opposition. Armadas of ships led by the Romulan answer to Napoleon with little or no reinforcement. Aliens with god-like powers. Or exiled Earth dictators, with genetically augmented abilities out for revenge. Come on.

I wasn't terribly impressed with "Punch it!". I'm an "engage" fan and not so much a "make it so", though I do a pretty bad impression of data doing an impression of Picard from Generations <flapping hand together> "Make it sooo"

Also, wasn't Kirk's tagline from TOS, "steady as she goes"? I kinda like that too.

It's not from Star Wars, though. It's straight out of the 50s/60s/70s car culture which also informed Lucas' THX-1138 and American Graffiti. "Punch it" meant the same thing "step on it" (step on the gas) had to the generation previous, and as such, I think it's the perfect thing for Greenwood-as-Pike to say when he wants Sulu to kick it in the ass and get somewhere in a hurry.

And yeah, just plain cool.
