Les Moonves Leaving CBS...

To be fair, NCIS is practically the TNG template anyway.

What "TNG template?" Or are you suggesting that the A-story/B-story stuff about characters was originated or popularized by that series?

In an SEC filing Monday, CBS said it put $120 million in trust to pay severance to Moonves, depending on results of corporate investigation. If Moonves is not terminated for cause, he would provide advisory services to CBS for up to a year, per the filing.

Nah. Gibbs as the Picard figure, the crew with its Riker type, it’s Geordi/Data/Crusher, etc etc. The Riker figure even had that on and off relationship with one of the other characters, and Marina Sirtis guest stars..how much more Trek do you want?. There is a very RNG feel to it when I am watching with my dad.

Though, if you tilt your head, counselor is almost the same job as director of Mossad.

Face of the Enemy. Nuff said.
The Marina bit is the jokey bit. The rest of it is quite serious. It’s very much in the vein of TNG once you take the setting specific trappings away. Less the anomaly of the week, but very much the approach to the set up for whatever problem is being solved.

Having seen almost every episode of both, I can say with absolute certainty the two shows have nothing in common - formatting or otherwise.

*shrug*
I’m not what you would call a committed viewer of NCIS. Mostly sat through early season while they were being watched by my dad. But it’s the feeling I get.

I see plenty in common between TNG and NCIS. Very episodic, procedural, with an ensemble cast, always on a new case each week, so new viewers can easily jump in without having to play catch up. The only thing TNG didn't do was extend its run by replacing characters with new ones played by cheaper actors.

Had Trek been on the main CBS channel, there's no doubt it would have played more as a very safe and traditional Trek show, and likely cheaper. It would have felt like a throwback to TOS and TNG in story format. Just a show you kick off your shoes to after a long day at work.

This is all superficial at best. Not to mention it was the make-up of almost every show made before 2000.

NCIS is boilerplate procedural to the extreme - to the point they use a template script every week. But at the same time, they also have a lot of recurring characters and have always weaved season-long (sometimes multiple season-long) arcs underneath the mystery of the week.

TNG was only 'procedural' in the sense it was episode of the week. The story structure was hardly ever the same between any two given episodes. There were no running story arcs and, besides Q and maybe Gowron, really didn't have any recurring characters.

How do you figure?

If anything, the exact opposite is true. CBS has been steadily interjecting serialization into its shows for years. Elementary, Seal Team Six, Madam Secretary, et al. Or, at the very least, they're like POI, which started out puzzle of the week style but shifted completely to serialization over its last three and a half seasons. Even NCIS is way more serialized now than it was when it started.

How did this thread go from much rejoicing about creepy predator Moonves getting what he deserved to a granular dissection of NCIS and what Star Trek would be like if it were NCIS?

Star Trek is obviously identical to the new prime time hit, 'God Friended Me.'

I did have an idea in my head a few years back about a crossover with TNG. someone is murdered on the Enterprise and Gibbs and his team from SCIS come to investigate.
It would be similar to the story they did on the air carrier Enterprise.
A crossover with Enterprise and NCIS: New Orleans would work better. Scott Bakula's Dwayne investigating Archer... win/win.
