Ledger wins golden globe

Well, Heath Ledger was indeed awarded best supporting actor in a motion picture at the 2009 golden globes. Hopefully this gives him a big push at the oscars.

This was pretty much a lock. And before anyone chimes in, this is not becuase he died. His performance as The Joker was absolutely brilliant. He walked away with the film. Even if he was still alive today, his Joker would be just as destined to become an iconic film villain.

agreed 100%, odowankenobi. He disappeared in that role. If i hadn't known it was ledger, i wouldnt have been able to tell. that's the act of an incredible actor and performance. He was an incredible talent.

Nah. The Globes are always giving out acting awards that the Oscars ignore. I can see him maybe getting a nomination, but I can't see him actually winning an Oscar for playing Joker.

Indeed. His performance in TDK was being lauded with award-worthy praise BEFORE his death.

I thought Philip Seymour Hoffman was better in Doubt (which I also thought might have had an even better script than Slumdog Millionaire); otherwise, pleased that Sally Hawkins for Happy-Go-Lucky, Danny Boyle for directing Slumdog Millionaire, and that film itself for drama, won.

I loved his performance. But does anyone else see this as an empty gesture? These awards are mostly about elevating an actors career. Ensuring that they are given better scripts in the future.

Do not mistake my meaning. Ledger getting a Golden Globe or maybe an Oscar does not bother. Its just seems so hollow. It actually makes his death even more tragic. Or am I nuts? ;)

^ Makes it more tagic because he could of gone on to higher levels though that alone doesn't come with awards (Look at all the snubs Depp has gotten in his career).

The Globes were far from perfect of course TDK was totally snubbed with no nom for best film. In TV sections, I notice Michael C Hall and Dexter both failed to win  surly at least one award.

That's one of the things I can't wait for after the Oscars is all the fan boys to simply shut up. I'm tired of all this crap out Dark Knight being the best picture last year and this and that. It was a hell of a movie and one of the best comic book movies but face it, it's a genre that doesn't get look into very often.

Comic books have always been targeted by people as 'dumb' literature or literature with pictures. True and I like them a lot but the Dark Knight to me is missing a lot. If you combined Iron Man with Dark Knight you might get a perfect movie but until then we get stuck with two great movies that have flaws.

Before I say anything - I'm not disputing the work as I haven't even seen Dark Knight yet - but I would say that the death made a lot of people go way OTT with their praise. For me thats where the stigma comes from.Obsessive fans ruin it for everyone :p

Seriously though - it's a shame he wasn't around to enjoy it. I've found most of his performances entertaining and he even made me like a chick flick.

Gotta say I'm also glad to see Mickey Rourke getting a win. I was at a screening for the Wrestler last week and I was blown away. Depressed as hell, but blown away.

Now I need to order Dark Knight and see if it lives up to the hype. I'm hoping it hasn't been Star Wars'd for me (I watched it at 23 after everyone and their aunt telling me it was the best thing since nipples were invented and was greatly underwhelmed).

His performance was lame and uninvolving. He won because he died. End of story.

The Dark Blinders are On Knight.

I am so sad that he didn't live to receive it himself but it was well deserved. He was absolutely amazing in that movie and I would be saying that whether he had lived or not. One of the big things that shows an actor's talent (IMO) is when you can be watching it and not think the entire time of the actor, you're just thinking about the character. That's what he did in that movie; I zoned out and pretty much the entire time I'm thinking, "wow, the Joker is creepy". Not, "wow, what a shame he died". Of course after watching the movie I was sad that he had died. He was already an amazing actor, I can only imagine what he could have become had he lived. :(

Maybe you should go watch The Dark Knight before you insult a performance you clearly haven't seen.

I have to be honest in that I think it was both reasons. He did disappear into the role and - to me - he is the Joker now. I don't think they'll find someone to top him. Though I believe he was only nominated because of his death. Science Fiction/Fantasy/Comic Book related movies are typically ignored by the awards (even though they're immensely popular).
