"The Filmation Music of Ray Ellis" CD (Retrograde Records, 2025), with soundtrack music for "Star Trek: The Animated Series", "Flash Gordon", "Jason of Star Command", "Shazam", "The Secrets of Isis" and "The New Adventures of Heckle & Jeckle".

Plus the long-awaited arrival of the Kickstarter project, "Black Mirror: USS Callister", a graphic novel (Twisted Comics, 2025) by Neil Gibson & Silvano Beltramo, based on the dark parody of "Star Trek" featured on the UK TV anthology series; plus collectable Callister insignia pin.

Also arrived: "Mirror, Mirror" anthology of short stories (Strange Particle Press, 2014) is the first collection of Jerome Bixby's science fiction in nearly fifty years, showcasing some of his best work. Features four stories made immortal by TV. Elements from two of these stories, "One-Way Street" and "Mirror, Mirror," were woven into the Hugo Award-winning "Star Trek" episode, which gave birth to the evil mirror universe populated by sinister facsimiles of Kirk, Spock and the crew of the USS Enterprise. Another, "Cargo to Callisto", became the basis for the "Star Trek" episode, "By Any Other Name". "It's a Good Life" won immortality as an episode of "The Twilight Zone". The anthology includes 11 other short stories and is edited and introduced by his son, screenwriter and producer Emerson Bixby.

From the Introduction by Emerson Bixby: "Dad and I also wrote a sequel to Dad's "Mirror, Mirror", which will hopefully be included in this book..." [It isn't, sigh.] "Taking place in TNG's time, "Broken Mirror" posed the question, what if Kirk and Scotty screwed up 70 years ago when they returned from the Mirror Universe? What if they left the door to both Universes open, and matter from each universe has been seeping into its opposite? What if a bearded Vulcan begins tracking down the original landing party in an attempt to prevent both universes' destruction? Roddenberry loved it, but at the time Shatner was misdirecting 'Trek V' and his fee for a five minute cameo just wasn't feasible. Bummer." [pp 11-12.]

Aaaaaaaaaaah!!!!!! Thank you for telling me this exists! I've ordered my copy. Flash Gordon is possibly my favorite Filmation score, and it's great news that the non-Trek scores come from actual master tapes (albeit mono) rather than being reconstructed from episode audio.

In today's post: Illa Dax's copy of the otherwise-unpublished book featured in the "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episodes, "The Muse" and "The Visitor"; the Pocket Books' novels "Millennium" trilogy and "The Needs of the Many"; the IDW comic, "Star Trek: Omega"; and the "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy" episode, "Series Acclimation Mil". This version is a fan-made blank notebook that resembles Illa's onscreen prop.

The latest "Star Trek" comic from IDW: "Lower Decks" #17 (the alternate cover is a Part 1 diptych of the USS Cerritos).

Also arrived is the "Lower Decks: Buffer Time" card game from Modiphius. The ads didn't say much about this and I assumed it would be a "Monopoly"-sized board game. The compact box with magnetic closure is rather nice.

I finally got my copy of The Filmation Music of Ray Ellis, after a delay because they sold out and needed to order more from the publisher. I admit I'm somewhat disappointed in the selection, since the non-TAS parts don't have as many favorite or familiar cues as I was hoping for. A lot of the Flash Gordon program is atmospheric and suspense stuff rather than the big memorable cues, and there's only a fragmentary selection from Jason, Shazam, and Isis, based on what surviving tapes Marc Ellis still had, apparently. Which doesn't bode well for a second volume.

Still, there were some good ones here and there, including one of my favorite Flash Gordon cues, "Mongo Passes the Earth," which I'm surprised to learn is by Marc Ellis instead of his father Ray. That was probably the one I was most hoping to hear.

I also found the liner notes a bit lacking. They didn't acknowledge that the names of the TAS tracks are modern inventions by the restorers rather than the original titles (and many of the cues are actually from Lassie's Rescue Rangers, or at least shared by both contemporary shows), and that they were reconstructed from episode audio instead of taken from original tapes. And they mistakenly said (twice) that the Flash Gordon movie was recut into the first four episodes of the series, when in fact its material was spread throughout the first season and its climax constituted much or most of the season finale.

Wow! Star Trek's own Paula M. Block and Terry J. Erdmann published a beautiful book, "Labyrinth: The Making of Jim Hensen's Iconic Film". It has now been reconfigured by Insight Editions (2026)… to resemble a VHS tape! Could not pass that by.

Also arrived this week from FanSets' enamelled pins: historic signage for Guinan's Los Angeles "Ten Forward Avenue"; a "Starfleet Academy" insignia communicator pin for USS Athena; a glitter Shran; and a "Strange New Worlds" Hemmer the Aenar pin (now standing alongside Shran the Andorian).
