Doctor’s Orders.
When I read it was about Doctor McCoy taking command of the Enterprise, I had to get it. There’s no way that’s going to be bad.
Diane Duane is the one writer of Trek novels that really *gets* McCoy. And it really shows in this book. One of my favorites.Doctor’s Orders.

I just finished Doctor’s Orders a week or two ago, for the first time ever. Loved it! Diane Duane is simply incapable of writing a mediocre Trek novel, let alone a bad one.Diane Duane is the one writer of Trek novels that really *gets* McCoy. And it really shows in this book. One of my favorites.

Doesn’t the omnibus have some new interconnecting material? I have it on my shelf, but I haven’t read it as I read and bought the individual novels as they came out.“Star Trek” pickups from Galaxy Bookshop tonight: the latest “Discovery” novel, “Dead Endless” by Dave Galanter; and I finally weakened and bought the 2012 omnibus version of the “Destiny” trilogy by David Mack, even though I already had the set of three 2008 MMPB titles.

As far as an answer to your question, my impression is that it's a question of word choices, not a question of storyline. None of the events are different.
Most of the changes were about streamlining the flow of the prose. There were no major changes to story content. The single most significant alteration was a single paragraph that I rewrote, I think in the middle section of Mere Mortals.
Have you read Doctors Orders aswell? I've heard both to be very common choices.Kobayshi Maru is a really interesting book. Shadows on the sun is one of my favorite books featuring Doctor McCoy. It's a really good story.
Her TNG stuff (Dark Mirror and Intellivore) are also pretty good. My all-time fave Duane Trek novel is still The Wounded Sky, though.Yes I've read Doctor's Orders by Diane Duane . I really like her portrayal of Doctor McCoy being in Command of the Enterprise. She has some really intriguing aliens in the book . The Enterprise crew are studying them on the planet. When Captain Kirk mysteriously disappears and the crew have to find out how to find him. It's one of my favorite books written by Diane Duane. If you like to read older TOS books Diane Duanes novels are really great reads . .Her novels Spock's world and her Romulan books are my favorite novels she wrote for Star Trek.I have all of her Star trek books.I highly recommend all of her books.
