Last movie you saw?

I felt the same way. I suspect this is a movie that might only work in a movie theater because of the visuals.

For me I just got done re-watching "Look Who is Coming to Diner." It had been awhile and while it is rooted in it's 1967 setting the movie still felt very relevant and important. I do wish they had given the daughter/bride more depth. She was way to naive and bubbly IMO.

I thought the guy was way too perfect. It didn't feel real.

Plus when Chekov says that line in TUC with a meaning opposite to the film's intent it seems as if he had seen the movie and sided with the racists.

I agree that the movie takes a more refined look at the issue but it was 1967. Being able to do even that though was saying something. You wouldn't start to get more gritty realistic stuff in the movies until the 70's. You can see though in movies like this and "The Graduate" were the movies are starting to transition into that. Plus what also makes it special is the acting. Everyone is great in and you got Tracy,Pottier and Hepbourn in it and even the secondary characters are nice. I really love the scene between Pottier's mom and Tracy about love growing cold in men as they get older.

As for Chekov I think the line was just a joke. But then I wouldn't even say the main characters are racist. I mean the main objection with Tracy is he knows that inter-racial marriage is going to have issues because the world is filled with racism and he is worried about the dangers that brings. He goes over this very well with the priest and it's pointed out that what they were doing is even against the law in 20 something states which actually makes getting the movie made back then even more impressive. The Jim Crow era was still going on at the time.

Cuarón (per the production team) filmed Gravity specifically for IMAX, so it works far better when viewed in that venue and in 3D. It would have been a letdown for me had I watched it on a regular TV, but seeing it in 3D in IMAX was a totally different experience. I actually had gastritis several hours later from stress due to the tracking and other shots in space. It was really effective imho....

You're right. I didn't put myself in the shoes of someone who lived back then. And yes it was a step forward in that context to make that kind of movie, even a gutsy one.

I've always loved the Gremlin movies. Surprised they didn't have a sequel beyond the second one.
Watched Gremlins 2 today on TV, it surprised me that Phobe Cates from age 20, dated and eventually became Mrs Kevin Kline and they are still married...nice one

Yeah, that movie was all about technique specifically created to mimic the feeling of being in space. Unfortunately it's also a technique that doesn't translate very well to a regular TV screen, particularly since much of it was done with 3D in mind.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade!

I just love the interaction between Sean Connery and Harrison Ford!

Done the traditional pre-Christmas viewing of Little Lord Fauntleroy (the Alec Guinness one). And as every year, when the Earl and Cedric get off their horses and the Earl shows him the land he owns saying "All this is going to be years someday", I can't help myself but mutter: "What, the curtains?"

I really liked the last Mission Impossible movie, and in fact it and the previous 2 are my favourites of the whole series. But 4 is the one I'd have to pick if I was only given one to pick.

The director's cut of the old Dune by David Lynch. There are lots of scenes that weren't included in the theatrical version.

The Predator

Way better than I expected (if a little too cornball). Definitely better than Predators, but a distant third after the classic Predator and criminally underrated Predator 2

Face Off: Not as good as I remembered. Some movies don't age well.

Yeah I kind of agree. Saw that at a cinema when it was brand new and only recently watched it on home video. Didn't grab me like it did on a big screen. But as an action piece it was kind of OK I guess. Just it hasn't aged well at all. The Super Mario boots I mean those boots at the prison were right off that movie.
