On topic: A friend sent this to me today and I found it rather pertinent.

Motorcyclists Riding 2-Wide In Lane Right Next To You Probably Know What They’re Doing

TIFTON, GA—Traveling lightly with little to no body protection and occasionally swerving inward to chat, the two motorcyclists riding side by side in the traffic lane right next to you on Interstate 75 probably know what they’re doing, highway sources reported. “They’re riding at incredibly high speeds within feet of each other and dozens of other multi-ton vehicles, so of course they know how to travel safely without endangering the lives of everyone around them,” car passenger Jane Kurutz confirmed as the two men suddenly nodded to each other, cut across two lanes of traffic, and resumed traveling in a two-wide formation. “Oh, look, now they’re being joined by four other motorcyclists who are also riding side by side. Yep, there’s six of them. Probably all highly trained professionals with years of experience operating motorcycles in potentially lethal situations. Pretty neat.” At press time, sources reported that traffic had slowed down and the no doubt supremely careful motorcyclists were expertly passing cars by squeezing between them in a single-file line.

Not legal in Ontario.

Should not be legal anywhere.

If I wasn't such a good natured person I'd say that if I was ever hit by a lane splitter I would get out of my car and kick them to death if they weren't already.

In retrospect I think if you are going to lanesplit, it should be done at least 50mph faster than the flow of the traffic, thus ensuring that by the time somebody fails to notice you and randomly decides to switch lanes, you will already have passed them.

I thought motorbikes always went that fast anyway

Motorcycles are kind-of like tachyons. They can't travel slower than the posted speed limit because of physics.

Well not all motorbikes are fast guys, my first bike couldn't go 50 mph faster than 0 miles per hour, so there you go

You don't seem very good natured, to be honest.

I feel this is relevant to this thread:

I don't think there is much need for lane-splitting down here. I think it is only legal if the cars are stationary.

Here is a video of a trip though Hobart (including driving through the city centre).

My god, everyone's on the wrong side of the road!!!

XenForo has a like system. I use the hell out of it on the XenForo forum I post at. Beats having ten million "I agree" or "This" or "QFT" posts.

I remember when I was much younger, I would see Motorcyclists lane split when I was just forced to sit in the car in traffic and I would get jealous. Why did they get to go at a faster speed than I did, and I actually thought they just got special treatment. Now, I do think it should be illegal (And learning from this thread, it's not in California). It looks like an accident waiting to happen and if there is traffic, Motorcyclists should be in the same boat as everyone else.

Somewhere Steve Guttenberg is crying.

Otherwise known as a day ending in "y."

Dammit! I keep wanting to hit a "like" button like on Facebook! We need one of those here.

It's obviously not as convenient as having a built-in system, but I added a "like" button and other non-standard emoticons and symbols into a Firefox add-on called EmotiConverter, and I just click on it in my sidebar if I want to use one, like so:
