I admit I did vote for Uhura in the "Gaila or Uhura" thread, though :) but that was partially out of protest at some of the posters on that thread calling her a bitch, partially because I already knew some men had voted in the "ladies, Kirk or Spock?" thread... and besides, there is no such thread for women...

Well now there is :) ....if I can get the poull function to work...

She's the shuttle pilot, I think. Not sure why I think that.

Edit: maybe it was in the book; I read the book, but I'd have to check.

I thought Pike piloted the shuttle in the movie... But yes, her! I think she had as many lines as Gaila, too. ;)

Anyone who goes up against scruffy McCoy has to be security-trained at the very least!

I thought she was cool too.

But given the choices given, I go for Uhura. I love the start of the bar scene where she's just rolling her eyes at Kirk's attempts to chat her up.

I'm a male (so I didn't vote), but I feel I must defend Gaila a bit. Sure she didn't have many lines, but she had a very likable personality in the scenes that she was in....

...and -- No -- I'm not equating breasts with personality (at least not in this case )...

We see that Uhura obviously has quite a fondness for her friend Gaila...and through association and projection, we too are supposed to have an affinity for her (i.e., if Uhura likes her, then we should too).

Definitely Uhura...no contest there. She was very "cute" in the movie. I know some people think she's a better actress than Nichelle...but IMO she needs to mature and grow a lot more before she can be put in the same category. But I thought she was feisty and spunky...and I like her to be even a more of an asset to the Enterprises' success in the next mission...

EDIT: In reply to Jackson_Roykirk

I agree, Gaila was fun and I definitely want to see her in the next movie - given half a chance she could give Kirk a run for his money in un-orthodoxy.

But I had to choose one.

there's no point in a poll in this thread. you just know the guys are going to come and screw it up. :p

see what I mean? ten bucks "nickryder" is a man. ;)

If Cupcake gets an option, then Lt. Syd Downe should have one, too, all I'm sayin'. ;)

But between Uhura and Gaila... hmm... Hard choice. I like the moxy Uhura has, but Gaila seems really laid back and cheery, which can lighten the mood of the room (especially if that room is male!)... Aaiie. Not an easy choice for me.

Well, in terms of friendship I think Uhura could possibly be the deeper and/or more loyal friend. You could probably have more meaningful conversations with her. she'd likely brook little b.s. and give very honest opinions. So you'd have to be ok with that. She wouldn't let a friend get away with making excuses or deceiving themselves. But there'd be a lot of genuine warmth too. Once she considered you a friend, you could probably count on her through thick and thin. She's probably a good companion for activities that also have an educational aspect: museums, cultural fests. Also concerts and other things that were more cool.

Gaila, well we saw so little of her, it's a bit hard to extrapolate. But obviously if you wanted to go out and just have a carefree good time, she'd be your girl. She'd probably be great fun going to concerts, bars and such- hangin out. She seems to have a bright Joie de Vivre. Now, being an Orion she might be better at pulling the guys.:p So hopefully, she'd be thoughtful about that. Quite possibly she might take off if she met someone she fancied, though. So you might have to be prepared for that. I think she could be a nice friend, but probably more the social butterfly. She's enthusiastic and probably would be full of breathless ideas.

For the movie, she's credited as "flight officer". Since I'm pretty sure that Pike was piloting the shuttle, I took that title to mean that she was in charge of everything else on that flight, including making sure McCoy was buckled into his approved seat.

Lt. Siddown, heh heh heh.

M'Sharak, I'm willing to believe that, but isn't a pilot a flight officer? On other occasions, officers like Captain Pike had somebody do the grunt work of shuttle piloting. Like Mayweather, for example.

I wondered about that, too, but I don't know. She's the co-pilot, maybe? Or the regular pilot for that run, yielding to a superior who wants to put in some flight hours?

According to this, "flight officer" may be any of several things, depending on the service/country, including the position of navigator or an actual rank equivalent to warrant officer. In any case, she's got the authority to tell McCoy where to sit on that shuttle, and when. :D

Maybe Pike enjoys doing some shuttle piloting himself. Or she's a co-pilot.

Who needs God as your co-pilot, when you have Lt. Syd Downe? ;)

Oh, and Pike enjoying piloting the shuttle made me think: He sure likes parking the shuttle, I bet! ;)

Salvor, I can only say that I enjoyed watching Pike pilot the shuttle to the Narada. He has beautiful hands. ;)

M'Sharak, thanks; that's an interesting link. It says Flight Officer as an old WWII US rank includes service "...as rated pilots, navigators, flight engineers, bombardiers and glider pilots..."

Whatever she is, she's commanding. Camille Paglia would say she has "Mediterranean moxy."

Yeah, I liked the "Sir, for your own safety, sit down, or else I'll make you sit down" and McCoy's "... fine... " [sits]. He knew, right then, that she meant it, and he wasn't going to push it to find out what being made to sit involved. Great stuff. :techman:
