Ladies, do you often get approached on the street?

I'm not a lady, but if weirdos talk to me I just pretend I don't speak English.

As a guy I've been on the other side of this situation a few times. About 8 years back, there was a really cute girl who I would see while going to & from my car at work (Our parking lot faced the lot of the small insurance agency next door). One day I saw her carry some boxes to her car. I asked her if she needed any help. She politely said no, but thank you. A little while after that I just walked up & introduced myself. We had a nice chat and she seemed very friendly. We exchanged work emails and talked about getting lunch together some time, and I ocassionally stopped by her office to say hello if I was leaving and she was working late. We never ended up getting lunch, and when I asked her out on a proper date she told me that she had a boyfriend. I have a feeling that it was just a polite excuse on her part, but I'm still glad I made the effort.

Another time a few years later, I was working part time in the music department of a large bookstore chain. Occasionally I would see a female customer that I found attractive or interesting, but I rarely approached them because I did not want to come off as creepy. One time after I talked with a woman for about 10 minutes or so, I happened to see her looking at the magazine rack just after I started my lunch break. I walked up and asked her if she would like to get some coffee with me. Again, she was very pleasant & polite. She said that she was in a relationship, but that she would have definitely accepted if she were single. She was so nice I didn't really feel bad about it. It's all in how you do it. :)

I remember another story along these lines. Around 98 or 99 I was riding the subway with my girlfriend at the time. It was a crowded car and we had a bit of distance between us (She was in a seat, I was standing, IIRC). A fellow who was sitting near her just said, "Excuse me, Miss... Am I your type?" Tracy found that a pretty amusing approach.
