La-La Land to release 15-disc original series score set

Man, so many favorites, but as far as full scores, these are my go to's for scores I never feel the need to skip tracks.

1. The Doomsday Machine
2. The Enemy Within
3. Where No Man Has Gone Before
4. The Man Trap
5. Elaan of Troyius

But, honestly, except for Tribbles and I, Mudd, I love them all a great deal. Tribbles is good in a few spots, but I really don't like I, Mudd. Comedy scores just don't work for me.

Almost two years on and I never tire of this. I'm always playing at least some of it.

Gerald Fried's scores to "Catspaw" and "Friday's Child" are available now from iTunes.

Neil

While I love Fried's music, what's up with the "hard-boiled gumshoe in the big city" arrangements of the Star Trek theme in Catspaw? It sounds more like it was written for some detective drama rather than ST.

Anyone else notice this?

^Well, they didn't actually get used in the episode, for the most part. The opening and closing cues were replaced with a couple of Alexander Courage's library cues. So I guess the producers agreed with you that they didn't quite work.

I've found the unused cues less to my liking in general. For instance, I didn't like Steiner's rejected NYC cue in COTEOF.

A notable exception is the beginning and end of "Sad and Thoughtful on Captain's Theme" (S2D5), which never made air. That's pretty good once you get hold of the elusive melody. The middle part used in "Mirror, Mirror" is fantastic.

Actually, the beginning of "Sad and Thoughtful" used in Gamesters of Triskelion as Kirk talks to Shanna about the stars. It is a lovely piece, but they do end it after the midway flourish.

Please forgive the bump (and the shameless promotion) but I was interviewed primarily about this set for the Melodic Trek podcast found on Trek.FM. You can listen to it here.

I was coming here to post this very thing. Nice interview. There's some nice stuff about TMP and TUC as well. He also interviewed Jeff Bond not too long back.

Two of the very best scores of the series.
I agree, particularly Friday's Child.

I wish Sol Kaplan had done a few more. Also, there are some great cues my Mullendore. Many of them sound a bit dated, even for 1966, but he would have been able to write more in the style had he been able to stick around for more episodes.

Huh. I just listened to Jeff Bond on the commentary track for "Fantastic Voyage".

Sorry again for the bump, but many of the albums are now available digitally. This is a great way to get the music and more volumes are coming. Please note that the two pilot scores and "Amok Time" and "The Doomsday Machine" as heard in the box set will not be sold digitally from La-La Land Records. The original GNP albums are available digitally however.

There's some real gems in there. Pity about Where No Man Has Gone Before. The 1986 release and the box set version are night and day.
