News Kurtzman: Why We Gave Spock A New Adopted Sibling

That goes with my theory that TOS is actually dramatic recreations within universe about Kirk's historic mission. :)

I'd watch that

My theory is that the Trek universe was created by the Q and for fun they made that the "TOS" time period look like the 60's but made it so human beings wouldn't mentally make the connection in their minds and would instead think it was all normal. Maybe they tinker with the looks of aliens from time to time and make alterations whenever they want to amuse themselves.

So, we're like "The Sims" for the Q? Interesting... :D

Luckinbill was splendid. The character and performance were superb.

I didn't say anything about Laurence Luckinbill or Sonequa Martin-Green or their performances so that's irrelevant.

The character of Sybok would be equally (or more) effective if he wasn't Spock's "brother".

The massive problems STV had lay elsewhere, like in the script.

My point exactly. Taking cues from a problematic script. Great idea!

The flip side of that is that Sybok wasn't less effective due to his being Spock's long-lost brother. That was part of my point. It was all down to how it was handled. The interactions between brothers themselves were even OK.

Itself Burnham being posited as Spock's adoptive sister isn't going to hurt DISCO one whit. What will matter is how it is handled.

Given this video they just posted, I'm actually very optimistic about the way it will be handled. Looks like there's a lot of interesting ideas they'll be exploring in their relationship.

Sigh. Region locks.

I don't know how it will play out but I do see one flaw in making Sarak and Burnham have this close realtionship where he and Amanda raised her is that it will not feel natural if Spock doesn't play a important role in the show. You going to have a incomplete family dynamic if the show kind of ignores the Spock character. It will also be interesting to see how they play Sarek in scene's where Burnham might not be in them and plus you got to wonder what he is doing in terms of his own career. Will he have a role as a Ambassador in terms of trying to stop the war or is he just going to be their to support the Burnham character and have nothing else to do with any of the other characters or stories that are going on.

I just made the connection that James Frain, who'll be playing Sarek, played Ferdinand on Orphan Black. That's a major plus in my book; yes, I guess sometimes I'm a little slow on the uptake. ;)

The family stuff never really interested me outside of occasional appearances. Outside of "Journey to Babel" and "Yesteryear", I'm hard pressed to find an instance where Trek handled it well. I was never interested in how Jim Kirk got to be Jim Kirk, and books on the subject usually bore me to tears. Heck, I still haven't finished the Kirk "autobiography".

I know that they had a lot of money, but would it have killed them to use a viewscreen?

I think this is the one:

Thanks. It's actually really good, and feels Trek-like to me. If I didn't know about this show and saw this clip, I would know immediately where it was from.

The holograms I'm not sure about, though. I hope that they really do explain why this tech exists but Kirk's crew never used it.

Holographic displays already came and went at least 3 times (TNG Last Outpost, DS9, First Contact). Maybe the best explanation is they're a fad that keeps coming back and dying.

I figure this all gets papered over by Discovery being lost and no one in the Federation saved any of the design files for the equipment associated with it.

I disagree. When I have discussions about my own life with my parents, they seldom (if ever) are impacted by siblings. Also, maybe Burnham and Spock are estranged, so the last person she wants to talk about is him. Considering that Sarek also feels the same way, Spock would be persona non grata in the family.
