Kurtzman intentionally killed Legacy?

If word ever got out that he did the nasty with his Chief Medical Officer, there would've been a scandal (aside from the fact that he outranks her).
Why would that be a problem? Fraternization is allowed, as per Starfleet regs. If word got out that Picard and Beverly had a thing, there'd be no problem at all. There's no scandal in that.

And we can only assume that birth control in the 25th century is 100% accurate. Meaning, Beverly would have only had Jack if she wanted to. So again, it begs the question, why didn't she tell Picard?

Unplanned pregnancies should have long been a thing of the past. With 25th-century medical technology, pregnancy must only exist if it is specifically desired. If Jack exists, and Picard (presumably) did not plan to be a father, then Beverly must HAVE planned it, and deliberately concealed it from him. So why would she do that?

Why? It wasn't in the 24th Century.

I have absolutely no idea.

Picard has many enemies (the Romulans, the Cardassians, the Borg). Any one of them would kill Jack to get at Picard.

Oh those first few years after the trip to Ba'ku, I'm telling you, modesty went right out the window. Perhaps a 24th century contraceptive equivalent was rendered inert and one thing led to another??

It still doesn't explain why she couldn't pick up a communicator and just let him know, of course. A better plot would've been if she had gone into deep space and was effectively trapped with no way to communicate, bringing up her boy on a backwater planet.

PRO has completely dismissed that idea, though.

We don't know that, do we?

And it wouldn't even make any sense. Medical technology, by that time, has advanced to the point where pretty much any disease can be cured. And they still haven't fixed a simple thing like birth control?

Seriously. Unplanned pregnancy should have gone the way of the dodo LONG before PIC takes place. That would be an absolutely trivial thing to cure. Trek's medical technology is just short of magical. Anything can be cured - even, in some instances, death!

We do
DS9 "Dogs of War"
SISKO: You're up late. You were waiting for me? What's wrong?
KASIDY: I'm pregnant.
SISKO: Are you sure?
KASIDY: Of course I'm sure.
SISKO: Oh, baby, I didn't mean. A baby. You and me. Wow.
KASIDY: Surprise.
SISKO: Surprise is right. How did? You?
KASIDY: One of us
SISKO: One of us
KASIDY: Forgot our injection last month.
SISKO: Julian reminded me of that. It's just that the way things been going on

The birth control itself was not faulty. It would have been completely effective if Sisko and Kasidy had both taken their meds. But one of them didn't. That's the only reason it failed.

This is the 24th century we're talking about here. The idea that birth control isn't absolutely reliable is just not an option. They MUST have fixed that problem by now.

So as for Jack, I guess it's the same thing. Either Beverly forgot to take her meds or Picard did. That's probably all it was.

If...

I can't remember - that whole thing with the changelings started after Jack's birth, didn't it?

Because given all the trouble they went through I can't see Beverly wanting to bring a child into the world after it started. So Jack must have already been born, right?

Jack was conceived and born because it served the plotline of Season 3. Period. Whether or not it makes logical sense is irrelevant. It's Star Trek. Aliens usually look kind of human but with rubber bits glued to their faces and speak English. Logical sense went out the window in 1964 when "The Cage" was shot.

Wasn't the war over by the time Jack was conceived?

By at least four years. The Dominion War ended in 2375. He was conceived in 2379 or 2380.

Yet both Picard and Beverly say he's 23/24 despite the show being set in April 2401 and this is despite the previous season being in autumn 2401 and that's without wondering why this poor young man looks like he's in his mid 30s. Rough life with Beverly I guess.

I enjoyed Season 3 for the fanwank value and had fun, but damn, the writing is not the best.

"Hey, let's portray a young man in his early twenties with an actor in his mid-thirties, not try to hide it and then have the character's background and origin be so poorly written that even the people who'll enjoy these episodes will be frustrated."
