Sounds like a cross between Short Treks and Deep Space Nine.

I kind of get why people are so sick of returning characters and familiar locations, but I think it's a bit depressing that we've gotten to this point somehow. DS9 brought back O'Brien and Worf as regular characters, it spent a lot of its time returning to places and races set up in other shows (the Bajorans, the Romulans, the Ferengi, etc.), it told us what happened to half the named Klingons from TOS... it was everything people seem to hate now.

When four out of five shows are essentially prequels with legacy characters, I think it's understandable that fans might be irked at how the franchise has relied on that since 2009.

I wouldn't use the word "hate" myself. SNW isn't the Trek series I would have wanted to pick up the baton previously carried by TOS and TNG, but it's still a very worthy successor that has done more good.

Starfleet Academy is not going to be a prequel.

Holy Prophets, I forgot how bad the photography was on PS3. How are you even supposed to see who’s who? I remember having to crank my TV settings as high as they’d go and even then the picture looked like mud. Truly awful.

One was just the Star Trek version of American Pie's "this one time at band camp" joke where she was constantly reminding everyone who her famous dad is, the other only stands out because she was played by the actor's actual daughter.

Between that and Jack Crusher/Picard it’d have been less Star Trek: Legacy than Star Trek: Nepo Babies! (Complete with the theme tune to Muppet Babies)

I think you're confusing Matalas' pitch with the original pitch for Star Trek Discovery in 2015 by Bryan Fuller.

Everything I understood about the idea was that it would be Captain Seven, the Enterprise and some of the cast of season 3. Legacy characters would appear, Denise Crosbie was invited to be Sela at one point and Stashwick would be back somehow.

Given that the likes of Ryan, Hurd and Stashwick have backed the idea and still seem to support fans who want it, I'd find it odd if they weren't supposed to be heavily involved.

What’s a pity is that the only reason she was an outlier on TOS was because she happened to be played by Gene’s mistress. He didn’t seem all that interested in depicting a female Starfleet commanding officer in any other instance for TOS. Even going as far as to insinuate that women are not allowed to captain Starfleet vessels in “Turnabout Intruder”.

STRANGE NEW WORLDS had a nice opportunity of basically doing what TOS should have done back in the 60s, not only further develop her character but also show Pike having a relationship with a female captain. So much for being weirded over women being on the bridge!

It definitely felt like a lamp shading moment purely done for the sake of a potentially sexist audience rather than something one would actually say in universe. He might as well be breaking the fourth wall. “Women on the bridge! Isn’t that weird???”

This is why I prefer “The Menagerie” as that thankfully cut that bit out, along with the bit about Number One said to have had fantasies about Pike. I do like that SNW never tries to mine out any potential romance between her and Pike.

Back in 2009, a lot of people wanted a series with the rebooted Kirk and company and SNW is as close as we're ever gonna get. It's a decent show but not amazing, IMHO.

I think fans are constantly waiting for something amazing and set themselves up for disappointment repeatedly.

Legacy, or a Captain Seven show, will probably suffer the same fate of its made.

From where I sit, it seems that they are clearly setting up the next series after SNW to be a TOS continuation. Either running concurrently with TOS (my personal preference) or picking up with season 4.

TOS is Trek's calling card (Who doesn't know Kirk and Spock?) It's the best way to attract new fans.

Paramount is saving it for the feature films (i.e., Kelvin). Plus, there's the concern about stomping on TOS Prime's timeline.

Defining a prequel as "Pre-TOS" and not-a-prequel as "Post-NEM".

Discovery Seasons 1-2 --> Prequel
Strange New Worlds --> Prequel

Discovery Seasons 3-5 --> Not a Prequel
Picard --> Not a Prequel
Lower Decks --> Not a Prequel
Prodigy --> Not a Prequel
Starfleet Academy --> Won't be a Prequel

I haven't looked at this thread since I last posted in it last summer, but I've put Legacy on pause in my mind until everything is sorted out with Skydance. It makes no sense to greenlight anything else -- Legacy or not -- until that's fully sorted.

Obviously I want the show to happen, but it's not something I'm going to argue about every day of my life for the rest of life. So, I'm just saying what my thoughts are at the start of 2025. And I'm fine with agreeing to disagree about it.

If you do an Andor set around the TOS era, you could avoid continuity issues for the most part. TOS tech could be seen sporadically, but having a bigger focus on unseen worlds would negate any need to reboot visuals.

It would just need to move away from familiar characters and settings, but keep a hint of familiarity. Of course, then you have the problem of it not being Star Trek enough for a lot of fans. It's a hard one to win.

Skydance is a bit of a wild card at the moment, not only with the deal being in purgatory for an unknown amount of years, but because we really have no clue what they want to do with Trek.

I think it's fine to discuss the concept of a post-Picard/Legacy-like series, as that's bound to be on the cards if the money is going to be there. The original vision, producer or cast may be lost along the way, as with Section 31. What was once eyed as a 5 season deal, is now a single movie. Things will change.
