Kurtzman intentionally killed Legacy?

On "The Orville" it's the butt of a joke that the CO and XO are an ex-couple.

But this is what Star Trek fans seem to like...

Oh Alex Kurtzman, thank thee for letting this cup pass from us.
Someone please turn on the lights

Matalas’ version of Legacy ain’t happening anytime soon, that’s for sure. He’s tied up on a million other projects.

Matalas wanted an anthology series that wouldn't have had anything to do with Seven and the E-G crew

It would've been more of a "Where are they now?" show (What's happening on Bajor this week? How is Alexander doing? What's new with the Klingon empire?)

Frankly, I can’t imagine a pitch for a Star Trek television series I’d be less interested in than that.

Callbacks for the sake of callbacks? No thanks.

New sets, costumes, makeup and ships for every episode!

Paramount+ is not Apple or Amazon.

Amazon has been having problems ever since it bought MGM (their long-rumored Stargate revival has had trouble getting off the ground).

Apple TV+ hasn't been pulling in the numbers that Cupertino has been expecting. Their streaming network has been producing critical darlings that have been racking up the awards (Ted Lasso, Shrinking, Slow Horses, Severance), but it hasn't been making much of a profit. (They've just hiked their prices. They signed a distribution deal with Amazon Prime Video in October.)

It seems CBS agreed with you.

Sounds like a cross between Short Treks and Deep Space Nine.

I kind of get why people are so sick of returning characters and familiar locations, but I think it's a bit depressing that we've gotten to this point somehow. DS9 brought back O'Brien and Worf as regular characters, it spent a lot of its time returning to places and races set up in other shows (the Bajorans, the Romulans, the Ferengi, etc.), it told us what happened to half the named Klingons from TOS... it was everything people seem to hate now.

Yeah, how interesting was Geordi after 10 episodes of TNG? They played a minor part and did fine in that role.
One was just the Star Trek version of American Pie's "this one time at band camp" joke where she was constantly reminding everyone who her famous dad is, the other only stands out because she was played by the actor's actual daughter.

DS9 still brought a lot new to the table, and in the case of bringing back returning races like the Bajorans and Ferengi, we got to actually learn about their homeworlds and cultures. Legacy, as pitched by Matalas is literally just a trip down memory lane.

As for Worf and the Klingons, they were studio mandated, so that's probably not the best thing to build an argument around.

It may have raised suspicions even in-universe (Seven may have well have wondered why Sidney was making such a big deal over her being Commodore La Forge's daughter).

She may well have suspected (rightly, it turns out) that Sidney was hiding something (like the fact that she was a changeling).

I doubt he intended to limit himself to the DS9 universe.

A bit simplistic.

Deep Space Nine told those stories after it established it's characters and place as unique in their own right.

They also explored new things. I'm all for a revisit if it's paired with boldly going too. Deep Space Nine introduced as many new concepts and alien races as explored old ones and filled out the Alpha Quadrant.

Unless one thinks the war arc would have been better served by being the Tzenkethi again, who eventually ally with the Tholians and don't bother with the wormhole aliens too much.

Why wouldn't we learn more this time? We learned a lot about the Romulans from Star Trek: Picard.

And it doesn't matter who put Worf on the show, my point is that it happened and it worked out. People say that DS9 treated Worf better than his original show did in fact!

I don't think they're wrong there -- Worf has some good moments and episodes in TNG but he wouldn't be one of my favorite characters in the franchise without the more personal storylines he gets in DS9.

Bullshit.

I think very little of Matalas as a producer (Less as a writer.), but he's at least been around long enough to know that something that lore-dependent would be DOA.

Why wouldn't we learn more this time?
Because that's not Lord Terry's thang.
We learned a lot about the Romulans from Star Trek: Picard.
In the first season, under Michael Chabon. Lord Terry disregarded that when he took over was appointed by Gene's Holy Decree, much to the ecstatic delight of his cultists.

People keep calling it "Star Trek: Legacy" but that title was ONLY a suggestion from Matalas when he first brought the notion of a sequel series, he has gone on many times since then saying it wouldn't necessarily be called that if were green lit.

This is the first time that I've ever heard that he intended it as an "anthology" series. Not sure what interview he stated that in, he's spoken several times about it so it's probably something I just missed.

He has said that he has already written scenes between Seven and Jack Crusher, where Crusher is Bones to her Kirk.

Has mentioned the multitude of storylines. I get there would be a lot of fan service and callbacks, but also a cohesive storyline planned as well, so not just relying on revisiting lore.

I read it around 2023 (shortly after Picard went off the air).

I don't think the guy knew what hit him.

That came after the campaign was in full swing.
