"Krypton" coming to SyFy from David Goyer

Yeah, but how can he possibly know that Krypton will be destroyed in his grandson's generation? It's supposed to be Jor-El who discovers that -- and is disbelieved. I see the narration more as a figurative device than something that literally exists in-story -- like the Sunset Boulevard thing of a story being narrated in retrospect by a character who's already dead.

Perhaps it's narrated by his semi-sentient holographic avatar, existing somewhere in Superman's Fortress/ship.

As a huge Superman fan, this concept has always been yawn inducing. Krypton and the Smallville years are prologue to the Superman story.

The story really begins with the words, "Lois Lane meet Clark Kent." So I'd rather see a Superman TV series, not a prequel about his grandfather.

We already have Supergirl,, so that pretty much rules out the possibility of doing a Superman series.

We also have Man of Steel, BvS, Justice League, and other films to take care of exploring the DCEU Superman, but nothing Canonically fleshing out the DCEU version of Krypton itself.

I don't know if a Superman series is really ruled out by the existence of Supergirl. I think they have a pretty well cast Clark Kent in Tyler Hoeschlin. He made a good first impression and I look forward to his return. It's nice to see a Superman that isn't a grump.

I think it's merely a matter of rights. For me, Superman has the best origin story of any hero. It's so cool and inspiring to me. And I enjoy the early years of Clark's life, when he was being raised by Jonathan and Martha. Superboy has been gone a long time, but I loved that part of the story and miss it. And yes, the meeting with Lois is amazing as well.

But here? Given Goyer is doing this series, I expect a dark, unlikable Krypton.

^ A Superman series featuring Tyler Hoechlin would be redundant in the extreme, and, as noted, we don't need a television series to explore/flesh out the DCEU Superman because the movies featuring him more than have that covered.

There's one problem with that--the current movies aren't exploring or fleshing out Superman. They are bastardizing him. But that said, even if they were perfect, on TV, we get more adventures of Superman. We also don't have to wait a few years between appearances. We currently have a Flash TV show that's a hit. There is going to be a Flash movie and Flash in the Justice League. I don't think one pre-empts the other.

It's tricky. Krypton can't be too idyllic, because this is the same planet that gave us enough psychopaths and would-be tyrants to fill the Phantom Zone AND who famously ignored Jor-El's warnings.

Indeed, one can argue that, in every version of SUPERMAN, the Kryptonians' defining characteristic is that they were too smug and arrogant to listen to Jor-El when it mattered most . . . ..

The series is set 200 years before the planet's destruction, and a generation before the days of Jor-El, Zod, Faora, etc. There's no reason why it can't be at least somewhat idyllic, and no actual reason, at this point, to doubt that it will be.

My problem with doing a Superman series is not just because of Tyler Hoechlin's version of the character, but it's also the fact that Supergirl has also been bringing in a lot of traditional elements of the Superman mythos and a lot of his villains, so the theoretical Superman show would probably just end up repeating all of that. They might be able to get away with a spinoff focusing on the Arrowverse Superman that specifically explored aspects of the universe SG was avoiding, like Lex, Lois and the Daily Planet, but I think that's really way one would work at this point.

,I discussed a possible Arrow-verse Superman series and think that it would need to commence with an adaptation of the 'Truth' arc - start with him depowered, estranged from Lois, going all Incredible Hulk road-trip on us: a little like Supernatural, just Clark Kent on his motorbike. Jade Tailor, Kady from The Magicians, would be a fantastic Lois too.

Great point, and that arrogance was never said to just pop up in the generation Jor-El had to face. Arrogance of that kind is built over a considerable amount of time, and would justify why years in its future, the Zods of the world see the need to change an aged, set-in-its-ways government by any (destructive) means necessary.
