Klingons

Well, if this is set before TOS, I'd rather not the Romulans show up. There might be a worthwhile story to be told with the Klingons, especially since the general public associates them with classic Trek so much. Would be nice to see more going on than just a basic "Stop the bad guy." story though.

I'm so sick of the Klingons. If Crowe is the guy make him a Romulon. That would rock.

Russell Crowe as a Romulan would look like Richard Burton as Marc Antony in 'Cleopatra' -- which isn't a bad thing.

Considering again, I might like the Klingons, TMP-style. I don't know, but there, for some reason, they seemed mysterious and menacing. Maybe because they weren't drunk all the time and didn't constantly tell other people "If you weren't a human/my brother/left-handed/wearing glasses, i would kill you where you stand!"

I just watched the South Park "Russell Crowe - Fightin' Round the World" episode last night...

Think that Crowe as a Klingon could have a ship named "Tugger?" ;)

Putting Klingons yet again in a Trek movie would truly be stupid.

The more I see the more I'm convinced that folks don't even remember TOS. They only remember parts of it.

needs to be one that we saw previously in TOS. If they do decide to include a TOS alien, I would much rather it be Romulans -- they were much more interesting,
But if this movie is pre-Balance of Terror, it may be hard to include Romulans.

Klingons, Romulans, Vulcans. They are all indeed very familiar to us all by now. Wonder what would happen if we pulled those one-time-episode bad guys into the present Star Trek stories/movies. Like what they did with Khan. Perhaps bring back Adonais (I'd mourn for him) or maybe bring back those creeps from Plato's Stepchildren.

In TOS the Klingons were referenced perhaps six times and actually seen only three times. And that's out of 79 episodes.

There was more to Star Trek than Klingons. Too bad so many don't get that.

"The Klingons" were actually shown in five episodes (Friday's Child, Tribbles, Errand of Mercy, A Private Little War, and Day of the Dove). And, if you count 'Savage Curtain' -- which had a Klingon, Kahless, but was not about "The Klingons" -- then that makes six episodes. (That's 7.5% of all TOS episodes, by the way)

However, just because they were not a big part of TOS as a whole, they were still the most widely used alien race in TOS (except of course vulcans), the fact that they were only in 6 episodes does not in of itself make it be "stupid" to include them. Having said that, I'm not convinced that an alien race shown in ST:XI needs to be one that we saw previously in TOS. If they do decide to include a TOS alien, I would much rather it be Romulans -- they were much more interesting, IMO, even though we only saw them twice.

But if this movie is pre-Balance of Terror, it may be hard to include Romulans.

they are also in elann of troyius

I can't help but think of The Simpson's episode that featured a commercial for Star Trek XIII.

Kirk: "Again with the Klingons (sighs)."

No matter what they do, it will piss off some faction within the fan community. I'd could go for a new alien or a rogue human, but I wouldn't mind seeing a Klingon story either, as long as the characters are written well.

If the Klingons are in it they need to find a way of making them much more badass than they have been recently. They should cast big 6-7ft guys as the Klingons, have minimal dialogue in the Klingon language and be of the bumpy variety.

If klingons, they CANNOT ignore continuity. Its been specifically stated in 3 seperate series that Klingons of that day were human looking.

They can however play with the design a bit. Give them weird looking eyes, more alien armor, play with more subtle makeup, some very slight ridging right at the brow and hints of color in their skin. Big tufted curling eyebrows, thick hanging decorated mustachios, etc. all at varying degrees of course.

It was never stated that ALL Klingons of that era were human-looking. All the Klingons shown in the series were, but what about in the rest of the fleet? Or on Qo'nos? The plauge shown in ENT couldn't have affected every Klingon in the Empire, therefore there must have been ridged Klingons at the time of TOS.

It was an airborne viral agent that would be spread very quickly, they made mention of that. So there MAY be pockets of Rigged Klingons, but the majority that would be crewing ships or not living in isolation would be human ish.

Tho im all for the Gen. Chang types.

Or play with their style of dress. I have yet to see a male Klingon in a 6 inch, pointy stiletto.

I dunno. I'd be suprised if we didnt see something on the forehead (when we see the klingons - in the sequel :D)Nothing too protruding. Very filed down. Bit like the TUC Klingons, except make em look evil. Dangerous. Make them the bad guys again.

Klingons stopped being threatening over 20 years ago.

Playing with some ideas: Not quite as toned down as the classic Klingons, but not as monstrous as the TNG

I wouldn't mind something like that, Venardhi, though I'd prefer the hair be a little shorter.
Now, that's all well and good, but how will these Klingons act? Will they both the gagh-eating brutes that allows talk about honor, or will they be the devious and cunning humanoids with precise speech rather than belligerent growls? I'm talking about actual TOS Klingons, before they were reimagined. There's nothing wrong with reimagining, and if we do see Klingons in the movie, they'll probably be the ones we're familiar with. But I personally would love to see those proto-Klingons with their regal manner and almost a twinkle in the eye.
I'm just gonna toss out some casting suggestions; I do think that Russell Crowe could handle the TOS type of Klingon very well, but two people that came to my mind recently are Hugh Jackman and Kiefer Sutherland. Both of them really haven't played many (if any) villains, so this would help people go in without the preconception that this guy would be a moustache-twirler. And they can both play rough (Jackman in X-Men and Sutherland in 24), but also are able to display a regal bearing (Jackman in the Prestige and Kate & Leopold, Sutherland in The Three Musketeers, though this was more understated). I think if we had a casting like that, it would make for not only a good TOS Klingon, but also a strong, not moustache-twirling villain in the vein of Balance of Terror.
But, feel free to disagree with me. It's not like I get to make the decision anyway. :( ;)

Cool picture. I figure as long as our dear Klingon friends continue to eat their food live and wiggling, I'll be okay with how ever they turn out.

The Rock as a Klingon...hey, it could work.

Although I admit that the meanest, nastiest Klingon I have ever seen in Trek history is actually a human in disguise (Sisko in 'Apocalypse Rising').
