Yeah. That makes sense. Johnny is a very common nick name for "Sam."

There is some discussion about this going on in this thread.

Some think that Jim shouts out "Georgie", thus implying that it is his brother. Some are also saying that it was originally the filmmakers' intention to make it George Jr., but Abrams decided to remove the reference and dub the line over with the name "Johnny".

I'm not sure if the director or writers have commented on it yet. Until they do, it would seem we are unlikely to know if that kid is supposed to be George Samuel Kirk Jr. or not.

The kid was hitchiking (he had has thumb out) seems unlikely to me, then, that he'd be Krik's brother.

This would be one of those head canon times when it is George "Sam" Kirk, jr. but the stepdad has called him "Johnny" for years to forget about George Kirk of USS Kelvin.

Jim (being an ass in this timeline) uses the "Johnny" name to tease his brother. That or he's only heard his brother called "Johnny", despite his name being George.
