Kirk not happy not being in XI?

Some time back, I read on trekmovie.com that a part in the story had been written for Shatner's Kirk, but it didn't fit in too well and made the story too cumbersome. If I remember correctly, Abrams said that this part would be revealed after the movie was released.
I could be misremembering, but I do recall Abrams having said that they couldn't find a way of putting Shatner's Kirk into the story which fit to anyone's satisfaction. If there was a actual part written, it would be interesting to find out what they tried.

Actually, a very quick and search of trekmovie.com, and I found the story. It was October 14, 2008. Here's the pertanent bit from the story as it was reported on the TrekMovie site:

Last month JJ Abrams told AMC that there was a scene written for Shatner and then a few weeks later William Shatner did a videoblog about how no one ever offered him a role. Although this appeared to be a contradiction, TrekMovie noted at the time that they could both be telling the truth. Today in a new interview with MTV Abrams clarifies that he felt the scene written by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman was 'good' but was also a 'contrivance' to get Shatner into the movie and that it didn't work, and so they never offered it to Shatner directly.

by the way, writer Roberto Orci has promised to share the Shatner scene with TrekMovie readers, but after the film opens.

How are they going to do it? make a clone from DNA taken from his body on Veridian III? :wtf:

well if this movie does indeed involve a change in the timeline, isn't it conceivable that kirk did't have to die on veridian? than in this timeline 'old" kirk is still alive. that would have been a simple way to get shatner in this movie.

I think there's a good chance that he's in this movie, and that his complaining is just a complex form of the Shatner Jedi Mind Trick, which The Shat can do in real life, and let George Lucas use it in his movies for royalties, probably.

You don't have to have Shatner in the same scene with "Old Spock". All they have to do is just have "Old Spock" have a flashback to "Comparatively Middle-Aged Spock", in the time period in which Kirk is still alive. The flashback scene could add color to some scene involving the new cast.

Bingo. No canon violation, and it fits the story.

PS: The Shat/Takei feud is fake too, probably. Like an East Coast/West Coast rap thing. Just kidding :)

I would rather have a story without Shatner or Nimoy. Nimoy being in the movie doesn't bother me, but I am getting kind of tired of time travel story lines. Paradoxes make my brain hurt.

Shatner didn't have to play Kirk. He could have had a cameo as a instructor at SFA. Can you see him shaking his head at some young Kirk antic and muttering "that kid will never ammount to anything".

Having read most of the news articles on Shatner not being involved, seen all of his videos about it and heard him talk about it on Howard Stern I don't think he's really upset in any way. He just gets asked about it all the time so he's putting on a act about being upset.
He seems more bothered than Nimoy can't share details. :rommie:

It would be so easy to bring Kirk back..just explain that it was his "echo" that came out of the Nexus (Guinan said her echo was still in there) so the real Kirk could be in there waiting to come out...it is so easy to explain. He should be in it, it isn't Trek without both Kirk and Spock..think of it..if we here in 2008 an get dna from soft tissue in a dinosaur bone then in the 24th century they could get dna from Kirks body that is now past a worm feast...there are many ways to bring him back if they could "think" of it..maybe if this movie does good they will bring him back in the next movie or the next since they signed on for 2 more movies...Shatner isn't getting any younger so they need to hurry. Plus the movie could start or end with a shot of Shatner coming out of a holideck all sweaty and Spock asking him what story he was doing and he could say that it was a great adventure called Generations..thus the entire movie could have been a holideck adventure.

I don't know. It seems like that would be a little more "Bobby was in the shower for 20 years and got wrinkly" than most people would be willing to accept.

Shatner's moneygrubbing and ego tanked his chances of being on ENTERPRISE back in 2004 or 2005. He can't even resurrect his famous alter ego on the small screen on a low-rated spinoff show without causing controversy and blowing his chances by asking for too many perqs and too much money up-front. I doubt he'd have been able to sneak his way into TREK XI without angering Abrams and the other producers somehow.

Well that is true, he does have a big ego. He said he would not have agreed to a cameo only and it would have to be a bigger part..well, that is the same thing Nimoy said of why he did not appear in Star Trek Generations so Nimoy has an ego also. But Shatner is correct, it is science fiction and there is a way to bring him back to life as they did Nimoy and keep with canon.

Shatner, he said he retired from star trek. It is just me, I just do not think Shatner likes the idea someone other then Shatner is and will be called James T Kirk. With Shatner not in the movie is a plus.

Look, the old bones is dead, the old scotty is dead. Shatner will not get the old crew back in the same room. Heck, even Georgi Taki did not want him to show up for his gay marriage.

Shatner, at one time you were a star ship captain and now your just a spokesman for priceline.com. What is next with his decline from grace.

I don't think it's ego. Of course, ego plays a part as it does with all of us. But Shatner is at a point in his career where he can make demands for a higher salary than most. His worked hard at getting to this point and there's no reason for him not to ask for as much money as he can get. Would anyone of us not do the same in his shoes?

BUT, since Trek XI sets up an alternate timeline, there is the possibility of Shatner appearing in later films.

Even with all the make up they can give Shatner. He will always look older then when he did die.

It would be like someone killed you off and they ask you to come back 15 years after your death to say hey guys I know I look older but it is me before I was killed in the movie 15 years ago.

True, it could be worse with fans. Someone out there is thinking how to bring back the Olson twins to be those cute little pre-teen girls and they are debating what to do with their boobs.

^^ no, since it is an alternate timeline, Kirk didn't necessarily die on Veridiian III. He may not have even entered the Nexus. It's all starting over in this new timeline/parallel universe. In this altered timeline, Kirk may very well die of old age in the 24th Century.

Tell me about the ENT stuff, I hadn't heard that before.

Shatner is what.. 77 years old? I'd love to see him in a Trek movie again, playing anyone. I wish he had a cameo. I don't care about his ego, it's what makes him Shatner.

That is true and he stated that he hopes he can be in the next one if there is one. He has recanted his statement of not wanting to be in Star Trek anymore. One way to explain away his age is like I said, have his adventure time in the Nexus to be a holodeck adventure. Remember the Bring Back Kirk Trailer Two? That would be a great movie.
