Kirk never said that

Laura Cynthia Chambers

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Does anybody here possibly know where this urban legend originated? The article hasn't been updated since 2013.

As for whether James T. Kirk ever "said" these words (whether he was the first to do so or not), we haven't uncovered any evidence that he did. Although it's easy to find hundreds and hundreds of attributions to Kirk for "A meeting is an event where minutes are taken and hours wasted," we haven't located a single one that provided any more specific source information. We know James T. Kirk didn't speak this line in any Star Trek television episode or movie, and we haven't turned up this bit of dialogue in any Star Trek-related novelization. How and when this aphorism came to be credited to a fictional starship captain remains a mystery to us for now.

I would guess it started with a non-Trek source. Some guy wanted to make a point, and he wanted to pretend he was quoting a well-liked source because his actual source was dull or unimpressive. And a fictional character seemed like someone who "could" have said anything.

I am guessing that he wished to cause people to pay attention to his words. Making a small joke is sometimes the way to do that.

This quote annoys me almost as much as the fake Einstein quote about judging a fish by its ability to climb a tree.
1. Einstein never said that.
2. There are several species of fish which have demonstrated the ability to climb at least partway up a tree.

You know, I like this idea Ensign Benson (how do you do the @ thing? It doesn't work for me when I type it) has of a parody set of things Kirk wouldn't say but don't want to continue hijacking the OP's thread without her permission. Laura, is it OK with you if we continue? Or would you prefer we break off into another?

Please make it a separate new "Game" thread. And you could start with Kirk and then pick another character, and the next poster has to do that one.

So like:
First poster:
Character name: "Phrase they wouldn't say."

Character name 2

Second poster:

Character name: "Phrase they wouldn't say."

Character name 3

etc....
