Killing off long time characters

I've seen worse and more disturbing death scenes, both in Trek, and on broadcast TV in the 90s.

Also, Gene's vision was that no one mourns in the future. Death is accepted as a part of life.

I hear a rumor they are gonna kill Q off. His race is an apparent threat to the entire universe. They will be starting with him. Hes on the run and asks Picard for help.

Only a rumor...

I really hope they do. Q was alright in small doses, but he grew more irritating the more he appeared.

I hope Guinan is the one to put in down, that would be immensely satisfying!

That could be a pretty prophetic post, I think, with Picard maybe being against the idea #drama

I'd rather not have Q die, but that would be kind of an interesting spin on the Guinan / Q feud. Since he doesn't experience time linearly, perhaps he's always known she'll off him, which is why he is so terrified of her (e.g. in Q-Who). Though that borrows a bit from Watchmen and Dr. Manhattan's vision of his own death.

I don’t care if they kill characters if they do it well. Spock’s death in TWOK still moves me deeply — it’s a beautiful scene, well earned and well played, that retains its dramatic impact even though they brought him back. The problem is that most Trek deaths are handled badly, with little real emotional resonance. Kirk’s death was awful, Tasha’s terrible, PineKirk’s literally laughable, Culber’s tone deaf and needless. Combine that with the recent trend to go for easy, big emotions and, yeah, I tend to be leery of the idea of killing off major characters. Do it if there’s a good story to be told, not as a cheap exclamation point thrown in for a quick gasp.

For me, death is a tool in the writer's handbook and because it didn't always work in the past doesn't mean it can't be utilized further. But mileage varies greatly on how death works. For me, Spock, Pine Kirk's and Culber's death all are highly effective within the story itself. Icheb, Maddox's and Picard's all make sense in the story. Others are less successful. I think Kirk's is the worst because it is so laughable in the moment, taking away from the story.

Well no. I heard guinan ends up falling in love with Q. I think they go out Romeo and Juliet style...

LOL! I always thought they were threatening to tickle each-other into cosmic annihilation.
They (supposed all powerful beings) looked so silly just standing there claws out, with nothing going on between them!

I'm surprised in the 30 years since, nobody has digitally revisited the scene to at least add some cracking force lightning, or crazy chi energy building up in their palms, or something! . :)
Double suicide, as we finally see the power behind these cosmic threats, as ...they tickle each-other to death!

Just a reminder... modern Trek is built to cater to more modern audiences. If you prefer older Trek (as I do), there's plenty to stream.

Why is this always a constant reasoning? Modern audiences aren't so immalleable, nor is this a staple of 'modern' fiction. Characters died back then too, but there was buildup and reason. Maddox, Hugh, and Icheb were just done wrong, and that's happened in a lot of series before, not like it's new or 'modern', it was just shock-value and poorly written motivation for Seven.
