Kill off Picard in BoBW

It wouldn't have been just for dramatic purposes, no more than killing Spock in WOK was.

It would've sent a real "it's not safe out here" message to let the audience know that if Picard, the main character, could get killed then no one was safe.

A little off topic but I thought Spock was killed off cause at that moment a 3rd movie was unlikely due to lack of box office success from 1st movie.

Actually, I checked. TMP made more money than any other Trekmovie to date.

Porlbme was that Paramount saddled Gene with all the expenses from the aborted "Phase II" TV series in the movie budget. TMP wasn't a commercial failure.

Isn't that a dramatic purpose?

He was killed off because during pre-production, Leonard Nimoy was tired of playing him and wanted out. He changed his mind after filming.
