Kate's Door Step

I wouldn't send a package to Kate Mulgrew. But what about a letter? I suppose it would still be slightly intrusive.. maybe you could send the letter through to her agent or something? It's hard when you really wanna contact a celebrity in a non-creepy sort of way.. you're not exactly sure how to do it..

You check their website (if they have one) to see if they've got an address listed for that sort of thing. Most all do. If they don't, then you go through the publicist or some such. But, you do not send anything directly to them because it is intrusive.

Kate does have an address listed on her official site for sending letters and such... now. She didn't before this, so I get why it happened.. to an extent.

Still, in the day we're living in, we should all know better and know that it won't be accepted well.

Actually that's not correct - there has always been a fan mail address listed on her website. If I recall correctly, her previous fan mail address was based in LA.

Me neither - never sent fan mail to anyone in my life, but I remember seeing the LA address on her official website.

Yeah I read about that too. People are strange... how the heck did they get her address.

Her husband is politician that once ran for office and he works in a high ranking office in the state.

True, but he's a politician in Ohio, not New York City, where Kate lives.

I'm just theorizing. Of course, it could be any number of things. The creepiest is the idea that someone actually followed her home. :cardie:

some ppl are weird but there is an address to send fan mail to and is clearly noticeable on facebook. so y send to her home address is just disrespectful and insensitive. lets hope there lesson is learnt and hope it wasn't anything bad in the package.

Okay I have to admit I would never send fan mail or a gift to an actor, it strikes me as mega creepy, to be honest I have been of Kate Mulgrew`s website once, it was more than enough, this website is as far as I go concerning trek, sending gifts to people I don`t know is totally out there.

Am I the only one?!

When I was a young girl, I sent a fan letter to Linda Davis, the country singer. You may remember her? She sang the duet "Does He Love You?" with Reba McEntire.

She wrote me back.

How do I know it was her?

Well, I went to a Reba concert a few months later, and Linda stayed out in the lobby after the concert to autograph things. I walked up with a shirt, and, as she was signing it, I told her about me letter. She remembered me.

I treasure both the shirt and reply letter to this day. It was really something to connect in some small way to someone that I really liked as an artist.

In fact, if I thought the likelihood was high Kate Mulgrew actually read her fan mail (which she says she does, in fact, read all of it), then I might send a letter now. But, I think it's far more likely her assistant opens it, reads it, scans for interesting stuff, and sends that over to Kate for later reading. So... meh...

Anyway, my point is that I think people do it so they can feel connected to a person they would otherwise never have a chance to connect with. You know?

^ Surely it would be much healthier for an adult to connect to an adult that they actually interact with in the phyical world? Adults writing fan mail to actors........ na

Like I said... I was a child, and I wouldn't do it now. I know better. But, not everyone feels the same way, and I think that they're looking for that connection when they do things like this.

I always thought it was weird to give an actor a picture of them. Why would Kate Mulgrew want a picture of Kate Mulgrew? If you're going to do that, why not give her a painting or picture of something she's actually interested in?

You know I`ve always imagined sitting next to a Kate or someone I admire in first class on a long haul flight. I still wonder what I would do. Do you introduce yourself, do you take quick glances so they would not notice or just ignore them. Would I have the self control not to speak to said actor. I guess it would be rude to interupt them.....

I've thought about that, too. But, given my friendly Texan nature, I have tendency to strike up a conversation with total strangers. Yup, I'm that person. The one who talks to you on the plane until you put you book in their face. Okay, well, I'm not that bad, but I do introduce myself. I figured, I'd do just that, and I would hope and pray that I didn't bring Mosaic to read on the plane that trip if it was Kate sitting next to me. Awkward!

Okay I had to google that, lol yes that would be awkward, however watching voyager on your laptop/psp/ipod very awkward to.. Sheeze could you imagine been online on this site with Mulgrew sitting right next to you, way awkward. lol Would you ask the air stewart for coffee?

Yes, but I do actually drink coffee.

What I picture is having the Mosaic audiobook going while I read along. I'm sitting in the window seat, so I don't notice who is sitting next to me. The flight attendant comes by to ask if I would like something, and I look at the attendant (completely ignoring the person next to me) and say, "Coffee?" They ask if I'd like cream or sugar. I say, "Black."

Suddenly, I realize the chuckling I'm hearing isn't part of the audiobook. I do the slow motion horror movie turn to the seat next to me to see Kate Mulgrew trying to more-or-less silently chuckle to herself about the situation as she can clearly see what I'm reading, can kind of hear what's on my ipod, and just heard me ask for "Coffee, black."

Then, I'd crawl under the seat and die.

Yes but you would take a story like that to your grave, and I think any Mulgrew fan would kill to have a geniune memory like that! God I would!

I have a fluff poll idea!

Instead of, say, interacting on the internet? ;)

I wrote my fan letters (twice over 10 years) to express my gratitude for her movies and for the inspiration that she afforded me over the (then) 6 decades of her acting career/life. I thought it was important to tell this person that her work held more worth than the simple royalty checks that came through the door.

That is the common theme for many people who get up at a convention to speak to Mulgrew, Shatner, Nimoy. "Thanks" for making me smile, laugh, think. The conventioneers get that opportunity all the time, but for those who don't have the opportunity to travel to one, all they have left is snail mail.

Perhaps the package left for Mulgrew had devious motives and I understand why she would make such a strong statement through her website to discourage such in the future, but fan letters have been a fact of life in our world "forever". Unfortunately, crazy people are also a fact of life. (Remember what happened to Charles & Anne Lindberg in the 1930's.)

More frightening to me than a letter or package that arrives on the doorstep, are these people which tweet the whereabouts of celebrities so others can descend upon them for photo ops etc. :(
