Justice League official "Zack Snyder" cut on HBO Max

God, I’d completely forgotten that, even though it did create quite the sensation at the time.

I have never seen either version--but I would like to check both out as well.

As for the black Superman costume, I am totally confused. If the costume is being recolored digitally then that means it was never supposed to be black in the first place and this is not the actual originally intended movie as advertised---or did Snyder want a black suit and the studio said know? What is up with that?

I took it to mean that it’s black but will be recoloured to make it look more photogenic or dynamic onscreen. It may be that the actual black looks a bit dull under a camera and needs something to give it a more cinematic look. Pure supposition on my part, of course.

I took this to mean that, since the new costume is monochromatic, it is much cheaper to just desaturate it in post, rather than have a new costume made in black.

I seem to recall Snyder wanting to use the black suit but being vetoed. However, it wasn't clear in whatever I read that the black suit was supposed to be for the entire movie. I guess we'll find out.

The scene released recently was shot with a full color suit. Proof being, that scene was already released as a deleted scene.

That would be my assumption, but it's odd that they didn't make a black suit seeing as the JL suit is new.

Basically, according to the Justice Con interview, Zack Snyder said he shot him in the suit with the proper colours because Warners wanted that but that he'd done experiments with his DP ro VFX people using Photoshop to show how it could be re-coloured post-production. For once I'm on the side of the execs.

Superman's black suit was about returning from death in the Fortress--it was specifically different in style from his actual suit. This decision is really pointless story wise except for the "cool" or "evil Superman" effect.

Look at it this way: if Snyder wanted, he could have used "comics accurate" as justification for a lot worse than just the black suit:

Comics accurate is more than just the art design. I wish we had a more comics accurate Reign of the Superman story to be honest. It could have led to a couple of spin off movies.

If this proves successful the lesson probably won’t be to have less studio interference but more. Hey, we can make money twice, once on the theatrical and once on the rerelease.

The theatrical release definitely made money. ...Just not very much compared to the production and marketing costs. ;)

Until his heat vision came in, L'll Clark would have been using a squirrel gun to keep pests and vermin away from the crops at the Kent Farm.

Although AFTER his heat vision came in, we got an "I am Legend" sitch perpetuating from the Squirrel folklore.

You think the theatrical release made money?

It made 650 million dollars and is considered one of the most financially successful movie "flops". The problem was that it "under-performed" earning almost 200 million less than Wonder Woman. The studio wanted Avengers level money--and I believe the investment was quite high considering they apparently made two films.

Hollywood accounting is a law unto itself. I’ve often seen Ed Solomon, writer of MIB & the Bill and Ted movies joke on twitter that he looks forward to the day that Men in Black finally makes a profit, so that he finally gets some royalties from it. Of course, he knows well that it’s made a fortune, but obviously it suits executives to use creative accounting so that people like him don’t get their fair share.

Okay, I guess we used two different definitions of "making money". You, and maybe @Mr. Adventure , used the phrase as in taking in money at the box office, while I used it as in taking in more money than was invested. And, yes, by the former definition, it definitely made money. The absolute minority of all movies, even big studio movies, have a box office of 650 million dollars. But, as you rightfully stated, considering the movie has a reported budget of 300 million dollars, and you've got to add roughly another 100 million for marketing to that, and considering the studio needs a movie to have a box office of roughly three times its budget to turn a profit, then, yeah, that movie lost money.

And I'm saying that as an absolute Justice League fan, who liked the movie enough to watch it four times in theatres. As somebody who's advocating for further ventures to bring the Justice League to the big screen. It's just, yeah, they bloated the budget, screwed up the marketing, and, I guess, too many people had either abandoned the franchise by that point, or were disappointed with the final product. My point is, the movie didn't make money, it lost money.

So a much better match for the one at the end of BvS, which is good. It's funny to think that this "made for streaming" alternate version will probably have better CGI than the original would-be blockbuster major motion picture.
