Just use a "Connie"!

Then why then is Star Trek: First Contact still Prime universe when Zefram Cochrane is completely different to the version in "Metamorphosis"? Why is Star Trek: Enterprise, when it's characters, ship and events are never seen or referred to in any of the subsequent Treks even in situations (like those ship displays in the conference lounge) they should?

I guess it comes down to how literally you choose to interpret what we see. IMO it's a television show telling a story, not historical documents showing found footage of real events exactly as they happened.

ENT may be an alternate universe created after First Contact, so we never got to see the results of the new timeline in which she would have been in the lounges and displays and what not. We only got 2 more looks at the Prime Universe after that point.

There was a whole lifetime in between First Contact and Metamorphosis. Plus, who knows with the Companion.

I woun't mind if they soft rebooted it so that the Enterprise always looked like the movie/refit version. THAT is the timeless one, in my opinion. I saw no reason to not use it in 2009.

Getting Peter Weller back for an episode to play Admiral Marcus (over subspace, Section 31 subplot) would be pretty awesome.

No, not unless he portrays John Frederick Paxton, or a future relative of his. ;)

Could be both. I would watch that.

Paxton is the maternal grand daddy of Admiral Marcus in my head canon!

People have coined this goofy term "head canon," which is equivalent to "subterranean flying bird."

Oh? You must mean bats! :D

The Batmobile or the Daily Planet are better analogies than real world cars, tanks because they like the Connie are fictional objects. Their looks have been updated as style and technology have changed. A Connie in the new show should reflect a "modern" aesthetic.
I think it's possible to use the exact design of the TOS constitution class, and add a modern level of detail to make it look every bit as "real" as the ships used in the alternate timeline movies. Imagine phaser cannons popping up from the hull, like they do on the Kelvin, or detailing in the windows where you see people walking. And I think there is an argument to be made that the TOS Constitution design is more advanced looking than the NX, because it is sleeker and more minimalist. The only thing that dates the TOS design for me is the fact the deflector dish area is not lit.

I have to say, this is the first time I've ever heard that complaint, and it is an odd one to make, IMO.

Personal taste. My reasoning is that from an FX point of view, it stands out because its the only version that isn't lit. You have the NX before it, and the refit and on after it, and the TOS deflector is the only one that doesn't light up. Even the alternate timeline Enterprise deflector is lit. But being dated doesn't necessarily mean bad. I don't know that I would necessarily change it because it has been like that for 50 years. Just saying that if a TOS Constitution class appears next to a Discovery class, the Discovery shouldn't have a big honking glowing blue TMP-style deflector next to it. It would be a little inconsistent.

It could just mean the technology behind the unlit deflector was an evolutionary mis-step in starship design.

... or maybe it did "really" light up, but it's not depicted in the "innacurate" original TV show depiction of the Enterprise. ;)

I was actually kind of hoping for a Miranda-Class starship. Years ago Brian Fuller made the off-the-cuff remark about doing a show set on the Reliant, and while I wasn't expecting the Reliant I did think maybe it would be another Miranda-Class ship. Maybe slightly modified to fit more into the TOS time-frame.

But I do want to wait until the 'final' version of the Discovery is revealed until a judge it. What we saw was just a rough draft.

Star Wars ships aren't dated designs like the TOS Enterprise.

From the exteriors, I'd argue neither are dated. Obviously, the interiors of the Enterprise are dated because they are suppose to be in our future.

The only part I'd argue is dated about ship designs in Star Wars is the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon, with its back wall of blinking lights which for some reason everyone in the 1970s considered futuristic.

Actually, I think it was when I re-watched Alien for the first time in years when I was 19 I actually screamed "why did everyone in the 70s think a wall of blinking lights was futuristic?" when I saw such a wall in the control room of the ship.

"Sir, these lights keep blinking out of sequence."
"I see..."
"What shall we do about it, sir?"
"Get them to blink IN sequence."

I never knew this. Can you help me find out more? Googling it just brought up loads of model kit ads.
My source for that info is "Sculpting a Galaxy" by Lorne Peterson, but I have found very little information about the Star Destroyer models online. For the original Star Wars, a small three foot model was made of the Star Destroyer, which had lighting only for the engines. For the Empire Strikes back, a new model was built, which was eight feet long and had a full fiber optic system for the windows.
For Rogue One, they have recreated the (slightly) different shape of the original Star Destroyer without replicating any of its shortcomings, such as unlit windows, chunkier details (compared to the 8 foot model), or any mistakes which may have originally existed in the model such as visible brush strokes, paint chips, etc.
I understand the need to improve details on the Constitution Class, but the overall shape is solid and should not be changed in my opinion. It's every bit as timeless and iconic as the Millenium Falcon, X-Wing, or Star Destroyer. I think that Jason "Vektor" Lee's Enterprise is the best example of an updated Enterprise that I've seen:

Here's a closer picture. Notice that, though it looks pretty much the same as ever at a glance, it has plenty of detail that becomes apparent up close. I feel that a good redesign of an existing ship class should, at first glance, look like nothing has changed.

A bird is not a bat.

Words mean something.
Fine. Cave swallows, then.

I don't know about the Falcon, because it's supposed to be a junker (and technically, Star Wars is a Long, Long time ago :D like the word nazi above says, "words mean something," right ), but you wouldn't be wrong about Alien. That does look pretty dated.

Then again, it's not like computers don't have blinking lights. So...maybe? I dunno.

So, all starships are just a server hub? No wonder holograms are so grainy ;)

I wonder if using a Connie but doing a aesthetic that is closer to the NX-01or the Kelvin, in terms of more mechanical, less smooth design of the TOS version. Not the full metal look, but kind an in between stage.
