Just use a "Connie"!

dswynne1

Captain
Captain
Or, better yet, do the adventures of Captain Pike and crew. Other than the Spock casting bring problematic, I would not mind this.

D.

PS. Or use a Daedalus-class, since it would be a homage...

Pretty sure Fuller and Co. are gonna go with what they've already planned. Sorry if that doesn't suit you.

Or maybe you should just wait until May to see what they've planned. Maybe you'll end up liking it even though it isn't taking place on a Connie with Pike in command.

It might be too late for a Daedalus, although a a ship with decades of history does have appeal. A old battle wagon still running strong.

I seem to recall....

A Daedalus still in use in the Vanguard novels.

That would be similar to the use of Excelsiors in TNG. Old ships, near the end of their service lives, but still useful in some small capacity.

But this is supposed to take place in the Prime universe! So if that's the case, then we can't see Daedalus class starships, because they were all decommissioned in 2196! To actually see a Daedalus class in DIS would mean that, (gasp!) it's not the Prime universe!!!

For all we know, the Discovery is already an older ship at the start of the show. That would be a great change of pace from every other Trek sequel.

Now I'm hoping they make the Discovery a Daedalus class. (Not that ball and cylinders design though)

Or maybe you should not make assumptions on the reason for this thread. Not exactly a conversation starter.

And what does not "suit" me is how haphazard the production of DSC has become, first with the roll out of the design, and now with the delay. I blame that on CBS trying to micromanage the roll out of the series, rather than allowing Fuller and company do their job. Trust me; I am looking forward to the series, but the excitement has been somewhat tempered because of what has been going on. Apologies for my "soap box".

Okay then, so what was the reason for the thread? Because based on the extremely little amount of info you wrote, it sounded to me like you were just venting about an unrealistic expectation, which I then pointed out to you. And again, sorry that doesn't suit you. But that's not my fault.

And while you have every right to feel annoyed with the delay, again I will say, just wait until May. No negative feeling you have will change what is eventually presented to us. IMHO, you should actually feel good about the delay, because it shows that CBS is willing to give Fuller the time he needs to get things right. Compare that with UPN, who wanted shit done yesterday and were famous for micromanaging their Trek series.

Just watch "TOS".

Star Trek is creatively bankrupt enough as it is. If it has to keep going, the least they can do is come up with new characters, sets and props every once in a while.

If a return to Captain Pike and a Daedalus is wanted, why not go back even further to Forbidden Planet? We can then have a flying saucer, an all-male crew wearing hats, and a robot! No joke!

They did say that there would be robots in the new show...;)

I think if anything, DIS should show that there were designs other than the Constitution-class in service during this point in history. The Daedalus-class would have been an...interesting...choice in an earlier series, but that ship has literally sailed by now.

Or they weren't decommissioned after all, Starfleet is notorious for it's poor and inaccurate record keeping.

Picard: "If only someone had discover a easy way to remove Borg nanites."

The fanboy in me thinks this would be great. But, I just think that ship has sailed. Plus, the outrage about any changes would only result in negative press for the show. Best to let them define their look on a non-Enterprise, before we inevitably revisit Kirk and Spock in the next series (if there is one).

My understanding is that the canon nature of the spherical Daedalus Class ship is vague to say the least?

I'm not 100% sold on what we've seen of the ship design so far, but I like the idea of it not being a top of the line/flagship type vessel and being a slightly older workhorse of a ship, albeit one that's still exploring the frontier, and can still go toe to toe with any enemy ships they encounter.

We've already got a Connie as the lead ship of the current film series - visually different from the Prime Universe Connie, obviously, but clearly in the same general design ballpark. Whatever one feels about the merits of Disovery's ship design, it is clearly not that ship - or the ship of any of the other Star Trek shows - and that is clear when one merely glances at it.
