Just started DS9 from beginning. Which episodes should I SKIP?

If you can collect a complete list of what everybody says not to watch the only thing to do will be to not watch the entire series.

Watch Babylon 5 instead.

LOL

psik

Except he'd have the same problem. Well, maybe "Severed Dreams." I pretty sure everyone likes that one.

I knew the "Duet" worshippers would come out in full force after I said something negative about it, so let me make one thing clear. I didn't say "Duet" was bad, I just said it was forgettable to me. And that's probably because most episodes that focus on Bajorans/Cardassians bore me, so I admit to having a bias about that. I wouldn't strongly discourage anyone from watching that episode, just state that to me it wasn't one of the most memorable episodes, but isn't terrible, either. I do remember disliking the season finale, though, which I found dull enough to discourage me from continuing to watch the series for awhile.

I feel the same way about Whispers and the other Chief O disaster. The one in which he's in prison in his mind, (the episode escapes me) is the one I hate the most b/c its never followed up. Visionary is the only one that I like

I recently started DS9 from the beginning too and am now in season 4, and there hasn't been an episode yet I hated. (Though Meridian comes very close, but that's season 3)

cool. I'll put Meridian on the do not watch list. I also understand Fascination, Profit and Lace, The Muse, Let He Who is Without Sin, The Emperor's New Cloak, and Ferengi Love Songs are bad.

Any others?

Why not watch all the episodes and ya know, make up your own mind?

There might not be much debate about the quality of some episodes but watching them at least allows you to do the independent thought thing...

Wow, not a fan of the "O'Brien must suffer" episodes, eh? I'm surprised! I thought most fans like those. Personally, I love them, especially "Whispers" which I thought managed to be a fantastically suspenseful mystery the whole time AND wrap up with a hell of an original and satisfying twist for an ending.

"Torture O'Brien" is definitely not my favorite subgenre of episodes. It does produce some good stand-alones like "Whispers," (which, admittedly, is less good on repeat viewings, but since it does rely on surprise value...are we being too spoilery to the person who hasn't actually watched DS9 yet?) but then you get something like "Hard Time" which, like Photon said, is never followed up on and really needs to be.

...come to think of it, there's a "What stories would you liked to have seen some follow-up on" thread running around here somewhere. I don't think that's been mentioned yet.

Funny, different fans' taste. I like most of the Bajoran/Cardassian stuff, which you hate. But I tend not to like "torture character X" story threads. (At the moment, I've just finished S2.5 of nu-BSG, and it feels like it's going through a "torture Helo" phase.) Torture O'Brien theme does produce some well-executed episodes, but it doesn't mean I like the idea behind it.

This isn't my first time watching DS9. I watched most of them when they were on TV. I just remembered that some of them were not very good, and I wanted to figure out which ones those were before I waded through them all again. I've got a pretty good idea now which ones are the consensus stinkers, thanks to you guys.

I just want to agree that the mirror universe episodes of DS9 were really good. Do NOT skip those.

DS9 has about 5 or 6 unwatchable dud episodes in every single season, with more in Season 1.

However, the problem with asking for lists from DS9 fans is that as tastes vary, some will say great episodes should be skipped, and you'd be missing out if you did so. Ie: some people hate all Ferengi episodes, even though many of them are great, so they'd tell you to skip any great Ferengi episodes. That's just one example, there are many more. The poster who said you'd have to skip all the episodes if you took everyone's advice what to skip is right. I don't agree with him saying to watch B5 instead though, as it has just as many if not more crap episodes than DS9 has.

Having said all that, some of DS9's most unwatchable, worst of the worst, include:

Melora
Fascination
Chrysalis
The Muse
Prodigal Daughter
Resurrection
The Emperor's New Cloak
Time's Orphan
Profit and Lace
The Assignment
You are Cordially Invited
The Sound of Her Voice (this one is a controversial choice like what I was talking about above, because many fans will tell you its good)
Wrongs Darker than Death or Night
Most of Season 1 other than Emissary, Captive Pursuit, The Nagus Duet and In the Hands of the Prophets

Navaros--Some of the episodes there I agree weren't stellar, but I could at least tolerate them. I definitely agree on "The Sound of Her Voice," though...after all the hype I'd seen on that one from people around here, it was a real letdown when I finally saw it.

"Wrongs Darker than Death or Night"--I go against the majority consensus on that episode. I actually liked it.

As for Season 1...I think people should cut it a little slack because the show was still finding its feet. I think it's a lot better than TNG Season 1, for sure.
