Just bought a PS3... where do I start?

I just bought a PS3, finally, yesterday. I chose it over 360 because I also wanted a Blu-Ray player.

I got NBA 2k11 - which is phenomenal. But going forward, I'm a little overwhelmed by all the titles, and all the features of the PS3. I browsed the PSN store, and downloaded a few free demos, but it was hard to sift through everything.

So a few questions...

1) What are the top AAA titles I should be getting?

Note, I already played Arkham Asylum on PC (it was amazing, will be getting Arkham City on launch day). I've also already tried Fallout 3 and Dragon Age on PC (great presentation/graphics/story but I didn't enjoy combat in either of them. Regardless I still have DA on PC so I wouldn't double dip).

F13 and MGS4 are on my list to get at some point. I also hear a lot about Uncharted 2, but is it ok to jump straight in without playing the first Uncharted?

Call of Duty: one of the demos I downloaded was I believe Modern Warfare 2 ("cliffhanger" in the snow? anyways it was fun even though i kinda sucked at it)... so this brings up an issue, where I'm massively confused by all the different versions of Call of Duty. There's CoD 3, CoD 4 Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2, something called "World at War" (wtf is that??). Which should I play?

What other games are really good? My favorite games have a mix of action and adventure and story.

2) PS3 features.
Ok so it can do Blu-Ray. and apparently Netflix Instant (waiting for a disc from Netflix to activate that). Can I play video files from my PC on my PS3 like divx/xvid? How would I transfer? USB stick?

3) PSN download-able games
Um, never heard of any of these, they are all like 10-15 bucks. Which of these are considered AAA titles?

4) odds and ends? Anything else it can do? I have the Slim so I don't think it lets you install linux like on the old one (I have a laptop so i don't have any real desire to do that). How about Playstation Home, are there a lot of people on it?
Great demos I should check out?

I really am impressed by the possibilities, I might never have to plug my laptop into my hdtv again.

Uncharted, then Uncharted 2 (the U2 game of the year edition comes out Tuesday so you can get all the DLC for free). You'll appreciate Uncharted 2 more if you play Uncharted 1 first, both in terms of storyline and how much they improved upon the game. I made the mistake of playing U2 first but I still had a lot of fun with U1.

God of War III is a big time exclusive too. I don't think you need to play I and II though to enjoy it. Plus they were made for the PS2. You already know about Metal Gear Solid 4. The Resistance series is overrated in my opinion but you might like them and Resistance 3 comes out next year. I think Killzone 3 also comes out next year. inFamous is pretty fun too.

If you want lighter fare, there's LittleBigPlanet. Ratchet and Clank are fun games if you want easier platforming.

Call of Duty: World at War is technically Call of Duty 5, but a WWII game. The Modern Warfare games are their own "continuity." Also, two different developers work on the CoD games since Activision is milking it for all its worth and releasing them every year. Infinity Ward made Call of Duty 2, Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2. Treyarch made Call of Duty 3, World at War and Black Ops. I just got World at War, and in my opinion it just feels different than the Infinity Ward games.

There's Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption if you like those sort of "open world" games.

If you like playing games online with or against other people, PS3 is free! :)

I just finished Resident Evil 5 co-op with BigFoot and have started Transformers: War for Cybertron. They're decent but not great titles.

Good list. I would definitely agree on RE5, you can pick up the gold edition for cheap now as well. I would suggest you look into FFXIII some more. To be quite honest I thought it sucked ass, and I know I'm not alone on that.

Uncharted 2 :scream::scream::scream: AMAZING GAME.

I would play one first or if you come to it 2nd like I did, it will annoy you more than it should because number 2 is several times better.

Saints Row 2 is another fun GTA clone...
Sonic & Sega Allstars racing is IMHO the best arcade racer available...
PSN games?
Critter Crunch is a fun puzzler...

This week Toys R Us is buy two, get one free. Also includes controllers and accessories. It's only a good deal if you get three budget titles or three recent releases.

1) Uncharted 2 is a must-buy title for any PS3 owner. I would strongly urge you to play U1 before U2 though. Another PS3 exclusive that I think most PS3 owners should play is Valkyria Chronicles. I really enjoyed Final Fantasy XIII, but it's definitely not as good as VII, X or XII (the only other FF games I've played).

There are a lot of there awesome games you can get for the PS3: Ratchet & Clank series, Burnout Paradise, Heavy Rain, God of War 3, Assassin's Creed 2, Red Dead Redemption...

2) If your PC and your PS3 are on the same network in your home, then I suggest you install PS3 Media Server on your PC. It allows you to share videos, music, and pictures over the network so you can use them on your PS3.

Putting videos on a USB stick is also a viable alternative that works well.

3) Wipeout HD and Pixeljunk Shooter

4) IMO the PS3 is just an amazing piece of kit. I use mine for gaming, for watching Blu-rays, and for watching all the TV shows and movies I have stored on my PC.

You wanna know what the PS3 has to offer? Two words: Mon. Tage.

I ended up getting MGS4 as my first new game purchase after NBA2k11. I was a big fan of MGS and enjoyed MGS2 (even though it wasn't as good). Never played part 3 but apparently that was a prequel so I am fine.

Amazing game, but I'll be done with it at some point soon.

Is Heavy Rain that good? I enjoyed the demo but I feel like I might get bored with the quick-time event style of gameplay (though they do a good job of implementing it, the fight scene was pretty intense). How long is the story of this game? It might make sense as a rental instead.

I'm considering Modern Warefare, Uncharted, Heavy Rain, or maybe Red Dead Redemption as my next purchase. I think NBA fulfills my "ongoing" gaming itch - meaning games that don't end, that you can pick up and play for a while, so I'm focusing more on good overall experiences. Is Modern Warfare's online mode still populated (I see MW2 and Black Ops are already out probably cannibalizing the online community?). Also do I need to play Assassin's Creed 1 before 2? I've heard 1 is not that great.

MGS3 is the best game in the franchise, plus MGS4 pulls ALOT of stuff from MGS3. I would highly suggest picking it up. You can probably get it for cheap, plus it was so freaking amazing.

Off the top of my head some PS3 exclusive games you really need to get.

Motorstrom 1&2.
Infamous.
Ratchet and Clack Tools of destruction.
Killzone 2.
Little Big planet.
Resistance fall man 1&2.
Motorstorm HD.

Heavy Rain has a wonderful plot and to play as diferent characters you can die without the traditional restart level thing makes the games even more immersive (rental not a bad idea though). I've enojyed playing on my friends PS3 more than I could ever imagine this year so sometime before May 2011 I want my own :techman:

Uncharted 3 title may of been leaked...

Uncharted - World of Deceit

Still to be confirmed but there is no deny either of yet. 2011 Christmas most likely ;) plus with Mass Effect 3 due out at a similar time OH its going to be so gooood to be a 2 console gamer.

Stone Cold Sisko, MGS3 is a prequel, but it also makes a lot of things in the fourth entry make a lot more sense and come into a lot more emotional context. Trust me, if you find it somewhere for cheap, grab it. It really makes MGS4 that much better and it's as tied into things in it as 2 was, IMO.

Since it hasn't been mentioned, I'd recommend Dead Space. It's a sci-fi survival horror with amazing atmosphere and gameplay, plus there's a sequel out in January.

Yeah, but Mass Effect 2 is being ported over to the PS3 next year, so if ME3 does indeed release around Christmas 2011, it'll likely be for the Xbox, PC, and the PS3.

While it will be ported, its still to be seen if it is a gimped version or not. Especially if ME3 can draw from ME1...which won't be released on the PS3

Little Big Planet is fun...though creepy in a Tim Burton kind of way. I recommend it.

I started a thread similar to this a while back (last year, I believe), and one of the games that got almost universal reccommendation was Valkyria Chronicles.

^ VC is an absolutely amazing game. It's actually one of my favourite games ever, and I've played A LOT of games over the years.
