Just bought a PS3... where do I start?

Thanks for the info, it is very much appreciated. Glad to finally know for sure before deciding to take the plunge.

The browser is crap. It works, just.. and you can view certain types of streams, but it's buggy (still) and slow as snail shit.

Still can't get into Infamous. I finished Prototype though, and I hear they are much the same kind of thing.

I had the exact opposite experience! I loved inFAMOUS and could not get through Prototype at all. They are indeed very similar, but Prototype, to me was just too over the top and the camera left a lot to be desired IMHO. It felt like it was rushed and unfinished to me.

I believe that inFAMOUS got better reviews and sold more even though it was a PS3 exclusive and Prototype was multiplatform.

I can't wait for inFAMOUS 2.

I love Assassin's Creed 2 but I am really craving a game with a really good story (in the vein of the PS1/2 Final Fantasy or MGS games), rather than a sandbox style game. Any recommendations?

I'm considering Uncharted 2, or Final Fantasy XIII to fill this craving.

I know Heavy Rain is story-heavy but I'm not feeling that style of gameplay (yet).

The other option is to wait a few weeks and get Mass Effect 2. I never finished ME1 (on PC), i found the combat and general exploration to un-interesting. I did enjoy the ME2 PS3 demo a lot though.

^This may sound odd, but I found with Mass Effect on the PC the combat is actually easier (in some ways) and fare more enjoyable on the harder difficulty settings. Maybe it's something to do with the A.I. and I have no idea if it applies to the console version.

Did the first one come out on PS3 in the end? I'm also toying with the idea of getting a PS3 and want to get a lay of the land in terms of games before I seriously consider it. Was the PS2 backwards compatibility thing totally abandoned in the end or did they manage to get it working?

Microsoft owns the publishing rights to ME1, so it's doubtful it will ever end up on the PS3. The upcoming PS3 release of ME2, however, will be coming with a sort of interactive digital comic that will apparently allow new players to make some of the major decisions that were presented in ME1.

As for backwards compatibility, as far as I know all current models do not have it. The original PS3s shipped with both the Cell processor and the Emotion Engine chip (which was the PS2's processor), but then they switched to software emulation because it was cheaper, and then finally they removed backward compatibility completely.

yeah, no more backwards compatibility

and since there seems to be a lack of enthusiasm for it: Gran Turismo 5
