Of all the problems in America at the moment, I think it's our abhorrent habit of clapping for movies and plane landings that is most worthy of international scorn. Keep up the good fight, and maybe one day you will stamp out this scourge of rogue displays of celebratory approval

There are people starving to death in Africa. I think you should worry more about that than trivial throw-away internet criticisms of American culture. But if campaigning to eradicate said internet comments is your bag, you go nuts, champ.

Have a relax mate.

I bet the starving people have a better sense of humor and are still more capable of recognizing sarcasm than you. Congrats on channeling my Dad in 1979 trying to get me to eat broccoli by guilt tripping me with a starving kids line, though. :techman:

Cool dinosaurs eating people conversation turning into one about starving kids in Africa?

How did it turn so wrong?

I am relaxed.

[whisper]that was kinda the point[/whisper]

Right back at ya, champ. ;) I even mirrored your comment to make it obvious. I can't believe you don't care about starving Africans.

'Starving children...' is the new Godwin. A technique hammered into perfection by generations of parents trying to get their kids to eat broccoli and sprouts.

I actually thought 'eradicating internet comments' really was part of Locutus job description.

^but surely not trivial throw-away comments. The internet would commit suicide without them.

My post count would certainly be lower.

I don't think your comment really was being modded. You just got a sarcastic response, which could also be considered 'throw away.' I mean, we are just talking about clapping.

And I'm being introduced to some gifs which will no doubt be very useful in the future.

When the I Rex was attacking the gyroscope with the boys inside I was reminded of the old Far Side Cartoon, with the polar bears. "Crunchy exterior with a soft center." :techman:

Glad I wasn't the only one.

Personally, I know the dinosaurs have always been the stars of this franchise, but this was the first film where I was either aware enough or cynical enough (depends on your point of view, I guess) to know who was going to die.

Owen's character was my favorite of all of the characters in the whole franchise. His attitude towards the dinosaurs is one that I found interesting, and incredible how his attitude was consistent over the film.

Claire was an interesting protagonist, one that I don't think the audience is meant to like until later on, when she shows a determination to protect her nephews. Her moment of saving Owen (twice) is not commented on because it needs no comment. It's just amazing.

Also, given how rude inconsiderate American public is nowaways, clapping at a theater is the least of my worries.

I can't see how clapping when the end credits roll is at all rude. During the film would be something else, but I can't recall ever seeing that.

It's massively weird. Do you clap after watching a TV show?
No, it's not at all weird. It's only outside of your experience. And, no, I don't clap after a TV show, but then a TV show isn't a large scale shared experience either.

Clapping at the movies I have no problem with though it's generally not done here, clapping at a plane landing is like clapping while exiting the bus or clapping at the taxi driver because you did not die while they were doing their job. Pure idiocy.

Depends on the show. Mostly I just cheer out loud at really great scenes.

Of course, if you didn't applaud when nuBSG jumped into New Caprica's atmosphere and launched Vipers while in freefall, you're dead inside...

Clapping at the end of the movie, or even after a great moment in the movie, is more about expressing your like for what just happened. Sort of like laughing at a joke, or jumping/screaming at a scare. What good does doing any of that do since the movie's actors cannot enjoy your laughter or scare?

It's part of the social connection between people in the theater. It's saying, "we all enjoyed this!"

Only time I can say I've experienced clapping on a plane landing is when it's a difficult landing, usually during a storm or after a rough flight through turbulent winds/the jet stream or a storm. Happned once when the Captain announced the landing was handled by the co-pilot. Can't say, or imagine, it's all that common or occurring in every circumstances just ones that maybe warrant it due to some extreme circumstance.

My only time experiencing clapping for a plane landing was flying in and out of Puerto Rico, and neither was a rough flight. I got the impression it might have been a cultural thing?

First time I heard cheering in a movie was when Bruce got blown up in Jaws, and again when Ripley spaced the alien in Alien.

And we should mention the pauses for applause to die down in ST:TMP when each character first enters. That was pretty blatant lol.

Bollocks. Laughing, jumping etc are not necessary voluntary reactions and in any case are [usually] the appropriate response to what's on screen.

Clapping during a movie is something a toddler does.

Why?

I find that it harkens back to the live theater days, and shows a mutual enjoyment of the film. It's as much a social experience as it is an entertainment experience.

Also, as I said before, given that people are demanding to be able to text and whatnot in the theater as well, clapping is the least of worries.
