Have I been happy with the entirety of the CBS run under Kurtzman? Fuck no. Some of it is downright cringeworthy.
But the answer isn’t to just go remake what was done 30 or 60 years ago. I believe they had the right idea in how they approached Trek, but didn’t really have the ability to consistently pull it off.

Considering the variety of approaches tried by Star Trek over the last decade, maybe the real problem wasn't the shows as much as it was asking people to pay for yet another streaming service. Having the shows on a more established service might have helped.
Star Trek is in a rut and it's difficult to know what to do for the best. It doesn't have the fanbase and resources of Marvel and DC who can afford to do multiple different projects catering to different tastes. They can make things anywhere from serious and adult orientated all the way to colourful and family friendly.
On the other hand Star Trek has an increasingly ageing and shrinking fanbase and those who make Star Trek have been primarily focused since 2017 on making things mainly designed to attract a younger audience which doesn't always appeal to existing fans or succeed in bringing in large numbers of new fans.
I would say that Star Trek has also done exactly that.
The fault lies not in our Star Trek but in ourselves. Existing fans is not a reliable metric considering how already fractured and tribal the fanbase was and has been since long before I was born. When so many existing fans already hate large portions of the existing content who do you appeal to? What determines the existing fans who are worthy of being your target, those who like the vast majority of all things Trek are probably the best as they, like me, will end up liking most of the new stuff that gets offered.
It is the people who disregard chunks of the franchise with some determined idea of what Star Trek must be that are the most vocal and create the illusion that most existing fans dislike what's new.
And a further complication is added when you factor in the prevalence of far right ideology today.
If I had a dollar for every time someone's said, "What Star Trek needs to do now is" and then proceeds to describe what Star Trek's been doing since 2017, I'd have several dollars. Like, enough to buy a beer at a pub and maybe even a snack. If you don't think that sounds like much, you haven't been to a pub around here lately.

Though, it seems before Kurtzman Star Trek worked for everyone 100% of the time, at least reading opinions online.
Fifty years in as a fan, this is all gravy. I really never expected the franchise to last this long. Is some of it underdone, lumpy gravy? Yep, without a doubt. I can bitch and moan about it nonstop (which I used to), I can also try to embrace what works and dismiss what doesn't.
Nothing in life is perfect. Nothing in life is without value, even if that value is just knowing the next time how to approach something of its ilk.
If this movie ever gets made, I'll approach it with that mindset. Everything is a learning experience. Without those experiences, good or bad, life really isn't worth even living.

But I KNOW what Star Trek needs to do now! Captain Picard's Android body is damaged and thus he uploads his mind into a younger looking make Android played by a new actor who of course will still have his trademark French accent.
Well it turns out his accident wasn't accident. Someone tried to kill him. It was Gul Dukat who has come back to the corporal world with a plan to create a army of androids that will be host bodies for the Pagh Wraiths who want to take over the Federation by using Android bodies of real people. A robot,page wraith version of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers."
Well Picard realizes to stop this he will need Sisko but Sisko can not return so with the permission of the Sikso family he creates a Sisko Android to help team up with in order to stop Dukat and the Pagh Wratihs. But they will need a ship.
Only one they can get hold of is the old Enterprise-D again and to get a crew they recruit a motley bunch of former Bajoran freedom fighters and ex Starfleet types and a few alien rogues who have useful skills.
The show will be about them saving the Universe by flying around trying to stop Dukat and the baddies plan from happening.
I'm surprisingly kind of intrigued by this.
We don't want Legacy.
No Seven of Nine means no Legacy. She was going to be the main character of said show. Plus this show would not be made by The Matalas. It would be made by Ron Moore!
