Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley developing Star Trek reboot for Paramount

If the movie is a reboot, they don't have to be fans. Because they don't need to follow any set formula other than a crew on a ship having an adventure.

While I have nothing against the notion of doing something new and with a different crew/set of characters, I'd still it to be within the Prime Universe.

But, I don't think that's what we're going to get, assuming that this pitch doesn't go dead in the water the same what that the 'Origins' idea did.

I keep coming back to the fact that Ellison and Goldberg are fans. And any fan given the chance to make Star Trek is going to want to add on to the story they have been watching their whole life, not start fresh.

I hope you're right. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that they must already have some idea of what they're going to put to paper, even if it is not fully fleshed out yet.

Exactly. There's not a need to keep holding on to the same old things. A reboot would be welcome to try and do something new.

I'm going to guess that Ron Moore and company were fans of TOS Battlestar Galactica when they decided to do their own rebooted take on the premise. So no, it's not necessary to continue what came before.

My feeling is they will make a fun and competent Star Trek movie that has plenty of adventure and comedy but don't expect it to really expect to be particular deep. It's basically just going to be like a MCU movie but hopefully one of the good ones. As for the changes they plan on doing. The good thing is I expect completely new characters so it's not going to be another re-imagining of already established characters. I am also going to make a prediction it is set many years after the TNG era and they will more or less pretend like Discovery's version of the future never happened. This allows them change things up and do their own thing and not beholden to much canon.

Do we even know what Hollywood people mean when they say "Oh, we're big fans!?"

IMO we assume a lot.

How often are people put in charge of these franchises without averring in public that they've "Always been fans of (insert IP here)."*
When it's sincere, as often as not it translates into "I've seen some of it over the years and I liked it."

Now, actors are a different matter. It's not so unusual for an actor to say in an interview, "I honestly was not familiar with this when I was offered the job. I've done a lot of catch-up reading and watching the earlier installments, and I..."

Some people, like James Gunn, turn out to be deep-dyed fans of whatever they're working on. And some others, well, the evidence is scanty given the final production.

*TBF, Abrams did say he was more of a Star Wars kid.

If they do a real reboot, they'll pretend that TOS's, TNG's, and every other Star Trek show's version of the future never happened. That would be the point of doing a real reboot.

Yeah, wake me when actual filming starts.

It doesn't matter who's in charge since all STAR TREK feature film projects end up languishing in development hell for years before either being rushed to screen with a hasty script including everything from the development hell period OR being outright cancelled and restarted from scratch, starting the cycle again.

They could do that, but unless they are using characters from those shows I am not sure what impact that would be unless they going to be taking a radical approach to the material like maybe no Starfleet in this new version of Trek or something like that.

I don't see them changing the formula.

No Starfleet? How about no Federation, no space ships, maybe not even set in the future. At some point the radicalness is going to be too much to call it Star trek. To make is successful financially it has to appeal to both the Star trek fans and non fans.

Follows a troupe of actors as they bring theatre to the masses.

“We just got this job, and we need to promote it!”
And calm the masses
