Joker Origin Story Announced

Catwoman? Supergirl 1984?

Both better movies then Batman v Superman in my opinion. Even ignoring how they're much shorter, which gives them points in my book, they're just not as bad. They're definitely two of the worst superhero movies ever, but still made by people better at their jobs then Zach Snyder.

I'm with Kirk on this one. Catwoman and Supergirl '84 are borderline so-bad-they're-good. Batman v Superman is just boring. I don't expect a studio to hit it out of the park every time, but if they're going to strike out I'd rather it be entertainingly bad at the very least. Something I can watch with my siblings over a beer and laugh at and/or with.

The way that article reads is more like the studio approached Scorsese.

Ah, you're right. The article I read when it was first announced contained the following quotes from Deadline.
"Warner Bros and DC are in the early stages of another Batman Universe spinoff movie, this one telling the origin story of the signature villain The Joker. The studio has set The Hangover‘s Todd Phillips to co-write a script with 8 Mile scribe Scott Silver. Phillips will direct the movie, and Martin Scorsese will produce it with Phillips."

"The intention is to make a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-’80s Gotham City that isn’t meant to feel like a DC movie as much as one of Scorsese’s films from that era, like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or The King Of Comedy."

The Hollywood Reporter's article from the same day (which I didn't read until just now), had this to say.
One report stated that filmmaker Martin Scorsese was producing the project, but sources tell THR that his involvement is far from assured.

Scorsese isn't listed as a producer on the project anymore and apparently didn't even sign the deal to begin with.

I’m fascinated by the choice of make up. It’s risky, which always appeals to me, anything to get beyond the same old same old. But, this might be a step beyond.

I’m curious of the business thinking behind making this Joker in the first place. It’s not going to be apart of the current continuity, and, I feel like that mixed the bran identity, such as it is.

As a comic fan, I appreciate a good Elseworlds story, but I don’t get how they will market it to a larger audience. But then, if they keep it cheap, maybe that’s not a consideration.

They're shooting in the streets so there's paparazzi all over the place, which means lots of shots like this one:

Here's a gallery with a few more shots of Joker, a look at the map of Gotham, Thomas Wayne and Zazie Beetz(don't know which role she's playing yet): https://imgur.com/a/nWImVJJ

I'm torn.. on the one hand Phoenix is a brilliant actor and given the right script could turn in an equally brilliant Joker but on the other side that simple makeup job doesn't spell confidence.

I guess i'm still spoiled by Ledger's Joker who, to me, is the definite movie Joker.

I'll give them this... WB's was smart to get the pictures out there on their own terms, for better or worse, than let the paparazzi break it.

And with that pic... I'm cautiously optimistic. In the end, make up schmake up. If I can get behind Cesar Romero with his mustache, I can get behind this.

Interesting how they rework Eliot Brown's 2000 post-No Man's Land map yet again, after ignoring it completely for BvS and Justice League. Also:

  • Adding Burnside to Somerset Township/Sheal
  • Moving Hinckley(and Nolan's South Hinckley with it?) from Tricorner Island to Center Island
  • Mercer/Arkham Island got renamed "McKean Island"
  • Bowery got moved from North to South Island
  • Moving the Amusement Mile from the north side of North Island (Nolan's first two movies had the district labelled "Farrow", right?) to Robbinsville
  • Grant Field is new, but located north of where Sheldon Park ought to be
  • Gotham Square has been moved from South Island to Center Island
  • And that pushed Coventry to the western third of Center Island
  • Snyder is completely new (whether named for Scott or Zack...?)

    Anything else?

Grant must be for writer Alan Grant, who had a long Batman run. Or maybe Morrison
McKean is artist Dave McKean who illustrated the Arkham Asylum graphic novel.
Burnley for artist Jack Burnley.
Sheldon might be for Sheldon "Shelly" Moldoff who ghosted a lot of Golden Age Batman stories
Otisburg? Otisburg?? OTISBURG!!!!!

Despite what I said after set video, I'm thinking this is going to end up having nothing to do with the comic version of The Joker. Now, I'm not going to write the whole movie off because of this, because it really does have a ton of potential thanks to the people involved. It's just not really going to be much of adaptation.

Its like DC saw Venom and went "Hold my beer"

At this rate, I can't wait to see the Nightwing movie, about a drug dealer who is peddling a drug called "nightwing" on the streets and has to survive against rival drug boss Ten-Eyed Man, who in the movie will be a woman with one eye, hooks for hands, and no super powers :rommie:

That's what it looks like to me.

It's looking like a movie about a sad man who loses touch with reality. What they said earlier about a "Taxi Driver" influence is on point here.
He(Arthur) tried to do things right but sadly just stumbles around town like a crazy person.

There probably won't be crazy super villain antics here. Cop's will taser him on the street and the movie ends or he falls down a subway tunnel

It doesn't have the grandeur of a comic movie. Feels like an independent movie

I've read that de Niro plays a late night talk show host which if true might be wearing the Scorsese influence a little too much on its sleeve.

A man with a bat will beat him down.

The movie looks interesting but more than a year away, they are showing a lot of stuff here. I wonder if this isn't his final look.

The director was asked on Social Media why he released so much this early. The direct reason he gave was that the production was swamped by paparazzi, so the stuff was going to be seen anyway, and he wanted to give a better look (as in better impression) than those paparazzi pics would give.

Great the Joker is disgusting himself as a regular clown now. Welp best to avoid circuses and places where children’s birthday parties might be held.
