Johnny Depp as the Doctor in a movie?

Stop being nitpicky. You knew full well what I meant originally and my point still stands. I didn't care if Tennant's native accent was English, Scottish, German, Russian, French, or American.

But actors often vary their accents from role to role. I don't see what the problem with Tennant, a British actor, playing an iconic British character, with a different regional British accent than the one he was born with?

No different to Connery tempering his own Scottish accent to play Bond really.

anyway back to the op...

Depp as Who? Yep, it’s a load of bobbins…

We can categorically put this one to bed now, having spoken to Russell T Davies himself. It’s all rubbish. “Someone sits in New Zealand”, he wearily told us (except with a few more expletives), “Types out a rumour, and I spend the next three days dealing with that rumour!”
Until the next time a Doctor Who movie rumour comes around, then…

Wait...is this confirmation the Doctor Who film is being written in New Zealand? Does this mean Bret McKenzie is going to play the Doctor, with Jermaine Clement as his companion? I'm off to start informing other message boards of this startling development.

I don't see why you're still harping on and on about this since I said in my original post that I didn't care what Tennant's native accent was.

Give it a rest already. There's nothing here to argue about.

Technically speaking only a Kryptonian should ever play Superman and only a Galifrayan should ever play the Doctor...

Ideally the Doctor should be a British actor, but frankly as with any role it should be the best person for the job, be the British, American or from Zimbabwe.

That's why a Welshman is Batman at the moment!

1. Christian Bale is an Englishman, not a Welshman. He was just born in Wales.

2. Batman is iconic, but his iconic status isn't related to his nationality, real or adopted; the character would work just as well in Canada or Britain or France. Superman (and the Doctor), on the other hand, are uniquely tied to the countries in which they live; it's an essential part of who they are.

He's Scottish. He doesn't use his real accent except briefly in one episode.
People from Scotland are British.
In the sense that they are part of the UK,

Which is the only meaningful sense of the term "British." "British" does NOT equal "English," "British" equals "part of the United Kingdom."

Consider me rested, to be honest I can't remember what your original point was anyway :)

[Iron Man is every bit as "culture specific" as Who. Try making Tony Stark irish and see what kind of outcry you'd get.

Actually, I've always thought that if I could cast any actor from any time period as Stark, I'd opt for the Irish-Australian Errol Flynn.

Since this story, suspect to begin with, has been inevitably debunked, it's not really worth commenting on. But I do have to say that if they ever did do a big-budget standalone DW movie (a sort of modern equivalent of the Cushing movies) and cast a big American star in the role, then Johnny Depp is probably the obvious choice.

Only thing is, he's probably too obvious at this stage - as if they'd cast Eddie Izzard or Stephen Fry when the tv series was relaunched. If they ever did such a movie, I'd like them to surprise us as the Beeb has done with Eccleston, Tennant and Smith. Someone you wouldn't have thought of but who turns out to be brilliant.

And I thought I could be pedantic :)

Hell he was born in Wales, if he was a footballer he'd be eligiable to play for England or Wales.

^Erol Flynn would have made a hell of a Tony Stark!

^ Would you watch that if it was directed by Michael Bay though is the question! Jason Stratham as the Doctor and Scarlett Johannson as Rose!

Too obvious of an internet rumor. They like to attach his name to anything and everything.

Someone with a bit more substance please.

Johnny Depp doesn't have substance? First time I've hard that. Then again most people seem to be oblivious to his work prior to Pirates of the Caribbean (with the exception of Edward Scissorhands) Pity.

And the new actor cast as Spider-Man is British as well.

Most people won't know the difference if they're a good actor. I had no idea Christian Bale was British, he's very good with accents.

I don't so much mind who plays the Doc, as long as they can do a good facsimile of an English accent. I agree that he is a British icon, and should be played British, even if the actor isn't. I was a bit annoyed with Eric Roberts' 'American Master' for the same reason.

This goes both ways, too. I'd have been miffed if Bale did Batman with his natural accent. Batman is American, therefore he played him as American.

Bond has been played by a Scotsman, two Englishmen, a Welshman, an Irishman, and an Australian, but they all do the British accent.
