Iron Man is every bit as "culture specific" as Who. Try making Tony Stark irish and see what kind of outcry you'd get.
Or try making Batman welsh.

I could see stark with a British accent..
Secondly, no one who is not British should ever play the Doctor. Period. Yes, actors are paid to act, but some characters are national icons. Just like only an American should ever play Superman, only a Briton should ever play the Doctor.
the most rational option would be to bring back David Tennant and set it between Series Three and Four.

Sorry, but I don't agree with that at all. Hugh Jackman, Austrailian, was the best possible choice for Wolverine, a Canadian.
And if a brit had the look and build, could pull off the accent and was a good actor, I'd have zero problem with him playing Superman.....and I doubt most people would either.

Doctor Who is doing just fine without David Tennant.
IMO, any big budget Hollywood-produced Doctor Who movie not featuring the current TV Doctor would be in a separate continuity, so I say go for it. But it would be nice if Matt Smith--or whoever comes after him--makes a brief cameo in the film to establish that.
Otherwise, I don't care about the nationality of who plays the Doctor--if I did, I'd be up in arms about David Tennant. What's important is that they convincingly play the Doctor as if he's British.
Henry Cavill would probably make a decent Superman, too, and IIRC he was one of the actors considered for the part leading up to Superman Returns.I could see Christian Howard play Superman...he's British. He is 5'10"...fanboys want Supes to be atleast 6'2".![]()
He's Scottish. He doesn't use his real accent except briefly in one episode.Otherwise, I don't care about the nationality of who plays the Doctor--if I did, I'd be up in arms about David Tennant. What's important is that they convincingly play the Doctor as if he's British.
But David Tennant is British?

In the sense that they are part of the UK, yes, but Tennant does not normally speak with an English accent. His Scottish brogue is thicker than Karen Gillan's, IMO...People from Scotland are British. He's Scottish. He doesn't use his real accent except briefly in one episode. But David Tennant is British?
I would. Only an American should ever play Superman, for the same reason that only a Briton should ever play the Doctor: They're just too quintessentially iconic national characters.
Each one worst than the last. While I disagree with a US Who movie, just wanted to point out Depp has played 3 English characters, Jack Sparrow, Sweeney Todd, and Inspector Abberline (From Hell).
