Johnny Depp as the Doctor in a movie?

Secondly, no one who is not British should ever play the Doctor. Period. Yes, actors are paid to act, but some characters are national icons. Just like only an American should ever play Superman, only a Briton should ever play the Doctor.

Sorry, but I don't agree with that at all. Hugh Jackman, Austrailian, was the best possible choice for Wolverine, a Canadian. And if a brit had the look and build, could pull off the accent and was a good actor, I'd have zero problem with him playing Superman.....and I doubt most people would either.

the most rational option would be to bring back David Tennant and set it between Series Three and Four.

Doctor Who is doing just fine without David Tennant. No, the most rational option would be to let Matt Smith go for another season or two and do a movie with him. Tennant's days as the Doctor are over. No one's screaming for him to come back except his hardcore fans....and folks outside of fandom could care less since they never really knew Tennant as the Doctor anyway.

I'm not sure if it's the suit or the beard, but just looking at that photo make me think I know who Simm should regenerate into.

There's a difference between a character that has a nationality and a character that is a national icon. Wolverine is not a Canadian icon; Superman and the Doctor are American and British icons.

I would. Only an American should ever play Superman, for the same reason that only a Briton should ever play the Doctor: They're just too quintessentially iconic national characters.

Well, for the show, of course. But if you're going for a film, you're going to want the widest possible appeal, and a guy who is still in the process of building his fanbase as the Doctor -- Matt Smith -- is just not as preferable as a guy who has already achieved widespread popularity in the role.

Technically speaking only a Kryptonian should ever play Superman and only a Galifrayan should ever play the Doctor...

Ideally the Doctor should be a British actor, but frankly as with any role it should be the best person for the job, be the British, American or from Zimbabwe.

That's why a Welshman is Batman at the moment!

IMO, any big budget Hollywood-produced Doctor Who movie not featuring the current TV Doctor would be in a separate continuity, so I say go for it. But it would be nice if Matt Smith--or whoever comes after him--makes a brief cameo in the film to establish that.

Otherwise, I don't care about the nationality of who plays the Doctor--if I did, I'd be up in arms about David Tennant. What's important is that they convincingly play the Doctor as if he's British.

But David Tennant is British?

I could see Christian Howard play Superman...he's British. He is 5'10"...fanboys want Supes to be atleast 6'2".
Henry Cavill would probably make a decent Superman, too, and IIRC he was one of the actors considered for the part leading up to Superman Returns.

I don't care if a Brit or a Frenchman or a German ever plays Superman, so long as he's able to perform the role well. Superman is not as specifically intrinsic to America as much as the Doctor is to Britain. A non-American actor would be fine for Superman, but (IMO) if an actor not of British origin were to play the Doctor, it just wouldn't feel right. Same goes for James Bond, really, though we did have an Australian playing him in George Lazenby. But Australia's cultural ties with Britain are a lot stronger than the United States'.

ETA: Added a quote for context.

Tennant is British, he played the Doctor as British, I don't see the problem? ;)

And he wouldn't have been the first Scottish Who anyway. I for one wish he had used his own accent rather than his mockney one, but I understand RTD's motives on that front.

Stop being nitpicky. You knew full well what I meant originally and my point still stands. I didn't care if Tennant's native accent was English, Scottish, German, Russian, French, or American.

I'm surprised that you'd take this rather racist stance Sci. As long as they can act the part, like a few others here aswell, I don't care what nationality an actor is to play The Doctor.
